The Champions League T20 has found itself in a bit of a turmoil after having lost a lot of fan base. Reports earlier suggested that the CL T20 is to be scrapped in order to maintain good revenues. However the BCCI has now come up with an alternative T20 league called the Mini IPL which will allow all teams to participate.
The general secretary of the BCCI, Anurag Thakur has informed the co-owners of the CL T20 of its liability and the reduced viewership. The CL T20 has lost its prominence and the drastic fall in the number of viewers which is alarming to the organizers has given way to the decision taken to scrap the tournament.
A firm position is to be taken in this regard before the end of the IPL when a meeting is to be conducted said an official. He also added that the CL T20 was no more serving the purpose of entertainment and that the crowds have drastically decreased. He added that an ‘IPL-2’ which the Indian fans can relate more to can be the solution to this problem.
Also the place for the so called ‘IPL-2’ is decided as the United Arab Emirates where a part of the previous season went on successfully. This will help the crowd in the Emirates to get even closer to the teams that they cheered for in the previous year.
The CL T20 was first instilled in the year 2008 and The Chennai Super Kings, The Mumbai Indians, The New South Wales and the Sidney Sixes are the ones who triumphed in the 4 years.
The mini-IPL will likely take place in UAE during CLT20 window and will feature this year’s top 4 IPL teams. Star likely to be official broadcaster.
