Ricky Ponting Reveals His Mantra Of Success

Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting in the latest podcast series ‘The Howie Games’ has revealed that a change in the batting order from number six to three after replacing Justin Langer in 2001 Ashes series in England turned out as the best decision for him to boost his career before carving a niche out of it.

Considered as a brawler in his early days, post-2000, Ponting has made a remarkable comeback while showing his capability with the bat on the field to lead his side on the back of his incredible performances. One such superb knock came in 2003 World Cup final against India at Johannesburg, Ponting smashed 140 off 138 balls to be announced as Man of the Match.

“I never felt I was an instrumental, solid part of the team until I got the opportunity to bat at no. 3. When I made the move up there, to me that was, ‘Right, now you’ve got your chance up the order’,” Ponting told Mark Howard quoted as saying by news.com.au.

There on, the veteran batsman Ponting proved his mettle at the international circuit while scoring the majority of the Test career runs at number second position.

Nicknamed ‘Punter’, Ponting became Kangaroos successful captain while pouncing on every opportunity during his cricketing years. Ponting has won 48 Tests as Australian skipper out of 77 Tests.

“I wanted that. I wanted to be the best player in the team, I wanted to be the best player in the world and I didn’t think I could do that from no. 6. So when I got that opportunity, that was when things started to change,” Ponting said.

Under Ponting’s tutelage, Australia has claimed two consecutive One-day International World Cup trophies in 2003 and 2007.

In India before the Ashes, Ponting had a tough time while facing the off-spinner Harbhajan Singh on the spin-friendly tracks when hosts won the Test series 2-1 in which the spinner has dismissed him all five times.

While coming to bat at No. 6 in a 3-match Border-Gavaskar series against India, Ponting was struggling to be among the runs when he was 26. He scored 11, 0, 0, 6 and 0 in five Tests innings. He finished the tour with just 17 runs.

In 2008, while serving the society – Ponting started the Ponting Foundation along with his wife Rianna to provide financial assistance for the families to beat cancer in Australia.

“A lot of people talk about the time I met (my wife) Rianna and certain things happened in my life where things really started to change, but if someone asks me I talk about getting the opportunity to bat at no. 3 in the Test team because it was the extra responsibility that came with that,” Ponting revealed.

In 168 Tests, Ponting has amassed 13,378 runs at an average of 51.85, smashing 41 hundreds and 62 fifties.

In 375 ODIs, he has scored 13,704 at an average of 42.03 which included 30 hundreds and 82 half-centuries.
