Delhi Capitals (DC) head coach Ricky Ponting has termed the batsman who runs at the non-striker’s end, running before the delivery of ball as ‘cheating’ And, for the same, Ponting wants runs as penalties. He is against Mankading, which is although legal in the sport. Ravichandran Ashwin, who has joined DC from KXIP this season did mankading of Jos Buttler, last season.
Well, ‘Mankad’ is named after legendary Indian bowler Vinoo Mankad, who first ‘Mankaded’ an Australian player in 1947. ‘Mankading’ is a method of running out where a bowler dismisses a non-striker by whipping off the bails before he finds a batsman well outside the crease.
Ricky Ponting had recently warned Ashwin to not Mankad anyone:
Ravi Ashwin, who will represent DC this term had been warned by head coach Ponting to avoid Mankading. He said it was fair enough for him to do it as it was legal, but he feels that there should be a run penalty to stop the batsman from cheating to steal runs.
“Yeah, I totally get where you are coming from. I wasn’t trying to say that you were (not) justified because it is actually in the laws of the game. You can do it… if a batsman is cheating, and trying to steal a couple of yards,” Ponting told Ashwin during a web chat.
“I just think that we have got to find a way around trying to stop the batsman cheating. We have had this conversation already. I don’t want to see anyone running two or three yards down the wicket,” he maintained.

The former Australian skipper Ponting says there should be a run penalty for any batsmen trying to leave a crease early at the non-striker’s end. He believes this practice by the batsman is cheating and therefore the team should be penalised.
“I think there should be some sort of a run penalty. If you are to get to the top of your bowling action and stop, and it shows that the batsman is cheating and is out of his crease, I think put a run penalty on them,” said Ponting.
“And do it right from the start, because that will stop him right away. Imagine taking 10 runs off a team total because you have taken yards. Those sort of things need to be looked at,” Ricky Ponting said.
The IPL 2020 will be played between September 19 and November 10. The venue this time is UAE and matches will be played in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah respectively.
