Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting will join the Australian support staff on their tour to the United Kingdom (UK). The visitors will play a warm-up game against Sussex from Thursday (June 7). The Aussies will play a series of five-match One-day Internationals and a solitary Twenty20 International between June 13 and 27.
Ponting was part of the set-up along with former teammate Justin Langer back in 2017 when the side took on Sri Lanka.
The veteran batsman Ponting was also part of the staff, helping Darren Lehmann set base against England and New Zealand earlier this year.
The Australian coach welcomed his former skipper. The fact that Ponting is a familiar face in the dressing room, will hold things in the good state.
Langer and Ponting had been part of the Australian side for a good period of time, winning trophies and earning victories following remarkable on-field efforts.
Langer welcomes Punter
“Ricky is one of the greats of the game, and since he was already in England doing some commentary we saw it as a great opportunity to have him join our team for this important series,” ICC quotes Langer.
“We have played a lot of cricket together and coached alongside each other previously, and he will also know many of the players already through his work with the team over the past two summers and his BBL commitments,” he asserted.
Langer also praised Ponting’s sharp mind and said his experience will come handy.
“Ricky’s knowledge of the game is second-to-none, and we know that his experiences, tactical expertise and leadership will be invaluable for this group, as we start to build a team capable of winning a World Cup in these conditions in a year’s time,” Langer stated.
Ricky Ponting’s latest assignment in the IPL though turned out to be an average one.
Delhi Daredevils (DD) finished at the bottom while their skipper Gautam Gambhir stepped down in the halfway mark.
Moreover, under their new captain Shreyas Iyer, Delhi won a few vital games but it just wasn’t enough to push for a playoff berth.
