Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah in ESPNcricinfo’s 2018 ODI Team of the Year

Four Indians including Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah made it to ESPNcricinfo’s 2018 ODI Team of the Year. Alongside them, three Englishmen, naming Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes also entered the XI. Also, no Australian or Pakistani player was named on the list. Meanwhile, Afghanistan star Rashid Khan and Windies batsman, Shai Hope got picked as well. Fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman was the lone player from Bangladesh to get a nod.

Rohit, Virat dominate batting list

The past year saw the batting pair of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma break bundles of records. Though Rohit averaged above 70 with the bat, Virat went on to complete 10,000 runs in ODI cricket. Moreover, the India National Cricket Team captain hit 1202 runs at an astonishing average of 133.55.

However, for the opening slot, Rohit would get accompanied by England’s Jonny Bairstow. The wicketkeeper-batsman also had a year to remember with the bat, as he hit 1205 runs at an average of 45 plus. New Zealand veteran, Ross Taylor seals the fourth spot, after having an average of 91.28 in the ODI’s in 2018.

Windies star batsman, Shai Hope, who hit two consecutive tons against Bangladesh secured the fifth number spot. The right-hander had scored one century against India as well. England’s Jos Buttler, the x-factor in the side got placed at the sixth position. The Lancashire batsman had a fantastic 2018, both with bat and behind the wickets as well. Not only he had scored 671 runs at an average of 51.61, but he had also grabbed 21 catches and affected nine stumpings.

Woakes, Mustafizur among bowlers on the list

Among the all-rounders and bowlers, England’s Chris Woakes’ name was found on the XI. The right-handed batsman, bowler scored 205 runs and picked 19 wickets at an average reading 41 and 26.63, respectively. Furthermore, the ESPNcricinfo’s ODI Team of the Year also has two spinners in Rashid Khan and Kuldeep Yadav; both being the wrist-spinners, were successful in picking wickets the past year. Though Rashid had claimed 48 wickets at 14.45, India’s Kuldeep Yadav had picked 45 wickets at an average of 17.77.

The pace department, however, consisted of Jasprit Bumrah and Bangladesh’s Mustafizur Rahman. As Bumrah got placed at the number one position in ICC ODI Rankings for bowlers, left-armer Rahman had picked 29 wickets at an average of 21.72.
