That Rohit Sharma is a big fan of football club Real Madrid is very well known. And the India opener has once again proved it with an exemplary tweet. Real Madrid, the most successful club in the history of the UEFA Champions League (UCL), bowed out of the ongoing season at the Last 16 stage, much to everyone’s utter surprise. Real Madrid had monopolised the competition since 2016, winning the last three editions to take their tally in the competition to a record 13.

However, last week they were sensationally knocked out of the Champions League after being thrashed 4-1 at home by an outstanding Ajax Amsterdam who overturned a first-leg deficit to reach the quarter-finals 5-3 on aggregate. The club was already facing the heat from the fans after their poor displays throughout the season. Prior to that, the departure of inspirational striker Cristiano Ronaldo and head coach Zinedine Zidane had also made the fans slam the club.

And at a time when nothing is going right for the club, Rohit Sharma has shown what a real fan is. Unlike the most of the Real Madrid fans, the India cricket star leapt in the defence of the club despite the awful performances this year. He took to Twitter to point out how successful Real Madrid has been in the Champions League, writing:

“First time in 22 years @realmadrid has failed to qualify for @ChampionsLeague shows how dominant & consistent they have been in Europe. Any team can have one bad year, it’s no big deal. They are still a powerhouse.”

Rohit Sharma, meanwhile, is currently gearing up to lead Mumbai Indians in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League. The right-hander recently impressed in the final two ODIs against Australia. After failing to get going in the first three games, Rohit scored 95 and 56 but both of his efforts went in vain. Australia went on to win either of the games to cap off a remarkable comeback win.

Rohit will be looking to guide Mumbai Indians to another good season after a forgettable 2018. Mumbai Indians had made a slow start to their season and finished at fifth. Rohit himself had a poor 2018 where he scored 286 runs in 14 innings.
