Rohit Sharma is reportedly in line to lead India in the upcoming T20 tri-series in Sri Lanka. According to a report in The Times of India, the board is set to rest at least five top Indian cricketers, including captain Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya.

As a result, some new faces will get a chance in the series. And in Virat’s absence, the team will be led by Rohit Sharma. The board has taken the decision keeping in mind the ongoing tour of South Africa. India’s African safari started in January and will end on Saturday (February 24) with the last T20 International.

“What is the point of sending these cricketers after such a hectic South African tour,” a team source source was quoted as saying by the news outlet.

The team will be announced on Sunday. The news outlet further claimed that the selectors would pick some new names for the series.

Rohit Sharma’s impressive captaincy record:

Rohit Sharma is not new to captaincy. The opening batsman had led India for the first time during the limited-overs series against Sri Lanka last year. He had led India to win in both ODIs and T20Is. His batting performance was equally impressive in the series. The Mumbai batsman had scored a double century in ODIs and a century in T20Is.

Moreover, he has proved his captaincy mettle in Indian Premier League too. Rohit is the only skipper to lead a side to three titles. Last year, he had led Mumbai Indians to a record third title.

Nidahas Trophy schedule:
