Rookie Abhijeet Garg Smashes Triple Hundred for Punjab in Col C K Nayudu Trophy Fixture

In the third round of the Col C K Nayudu Trophy 2017-18, Punjab opening batsman Abhijeet Garg registered a triple hundred to pile-up miseries against Jonty Sidhu-led Delhi at IS Bindra Cricket Stadium in Mohali.

“We do not have words to express our feelings on his achievement,” Abhijeet’s father Pankaj Garg, a district public prosecutor in the Panchkula court told Indian Express.

The promising batsman in the form of Abhijeet, who is currently pursuing the Bachelor of Law (LLB) at Panjab University, revealed he was thoroughly focusing on his batting.

“Scoring a triple hundred in my third game for Punjab means a lot for me. When I was playing, my focus was on my batting,” Abhijeet told Indian Express.

Interestingly, the 22-year-old Abhijeet, who has the knack of playing the longer innings featured in his third game to achieve the feat.

“I wanted to capiltalise on double hundred. The way I was batting, my target was 400 but that’s cricket,” Abhijeet maintained.

On October 28, the top-order batsman faced 568 deliveries to score 310, before gloveman Dinesh Mor caught him.

In his incredible knock, Abhijeet smashed 38 boundaries to score at the strike-rate of 54.48 and posted 492-run partnership for the second wicket.

“It was a superb innings from Abhijeet. He is a good find for Punjab cricket and Sanvir [Singh] too showed maturity during his double hundred,” delighted Punjab Under-23 coach Sunil Saggi said.

The right-handed batsman Abhijeet hails from Dhuri town, a part of Punjab, before moving to Chandigarh city to make most out of cricket he cherished at the very tender age.

“I talked to Sanvir Singh about playing with patience initially. It was good to share a record second-wicket partnership for Punjab team,” remarked Abhijeet.

The hosts posting staggering 841 in the first innings which further saw Sanvir Singh (231 off 426) smashed a double-hundred before hosts skipper Karan Kaila declared the innings with nine down after facing 246 overs.

It’s pertinent to mention, Abhijeet’s younger brother Aditya Gard was hospitalized in Panchkula district after suffering from the dengue.

Moreover, his parents; Pankaj Garg and Sunita Garg were taking care of Aditya at the Sector Six hospital in Chandigarh and did not reach to the ground when their son was elated — to cross the three-hundred-run mark.

“My parents told me not to worry as Aditya will recover soon. After my double hundred yesterday, he told me that I played well and I should bat well today as well,” Abhijeet asserted.

However, his uncle Ashwani Garg was at the stadium to back him for his spectacular knock.

“We had also planned to watch the match, but with Aditya’s platelet count coming low, we had to miss. We told him to concentrate on his match and this triple hundred shows his dedication,” Pankaj added.
