Roston Chase, Jason Holder Rescue West Indies After Shaky Start Against Pakistan On Day One Of The 2nd Test

Roston Chase and skipper Jason Holder has registered a significant 132-run partnership on the first day of the second Test to help the West Indies — to reach 286 for six at stumps against Pakistan at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados.

West Indies batsmen dominated the final session as Pakistan bowlers toiled hard without success, in the final session of the first day’s play.

After frustrating Pakistan bowlers with their enterprising knocks, Chase, who registered his second Test century and Holder kept on ticking the scoreboard after losing first six wickets at the score of 154 in 50 overs.

In August 2016, Chase registered his maiden century against India at Sabina Park.

At the stumps, the right-handed batsman Chase was batting on 131 off 207 deliveries whereas, Holder remained unbeaten on 58 off 125 balls.

The 25-year-old Chase’s innings is laced with 17 boundaries as he knitted 132-run partnership in 39 overs alongside Holder, who contributed 58 runs in the vital seventh wicket stand with Chase adding 69.

The other crucial runs came from opener Kieran Powell, who scored 38 off 83 balls before being dismissed by Mohammad Amir when trapping the latter in front of the stumps.

The replays suggested the ball pitched in line and was hitting the stumps after being given not out by on-field umpire Richard Kettleborough.

Moreover, wicket-keeper batsman Shane Dowrich contributed 29 off 54 balls. He was caught by Younis Khan on the bowling of leg-spinner Shadab Khan.

For sixth wicket Chase alongside Dowrich posted 47 runs for the sixth wicket which further frustrated visitors bowlers.

Earlier, the Windies skipper Holder won the toss, on the opening day of the second Test on Sunday and decided to bat first against the Misbah-Ul-Haq-led side, who are leading the three-match Test series 1-0.

The two fast bowlers in the form of Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Abbas shared two wickets each whereas, spinners like Yasir Shah and Shadab Khan picked wicket apiece.

While repeating the first Test, West Indies lost first three wickets inside first six overs when the scoreboard read 37 before Kieran Powell registered a 65-run stand with Chase for the fourth wicket.

Opening batsman Kraigg Brathwaite, who had a dismal show in the three outings, was removed cheaply on 9 off 18 deliveries by left-arm fast bowler Mohammad Amir as he nicked the cherry straight into the gloves of wicket-keeper Sarfraz Ahmed when Windies posted 12 on board in 4.5 overs.

The rookie left-handed batsman Shimron Hetmyer trudged off the ground after scoring just one in four balls to see Windies struggling at 13 for 2.

Hetmyer was caught smartly by Azhar Ali at third slip on the bowling off pacer Mohammad Abbas.

The right-handed batsman Shai Hope, who looked struggling while spending almost an hour at the crease, was undone by leg-spinner Yasir Shah when the latter was caught by wicketkeeper Sarfraz on 5 off 30 balls.

At Lunch West Indies were 72 for three as Kieran Powell and Roston Chase steadied the ship, later on, to post 104 for four in 32.4 overs.

The left-handed batsman Vishaul Singh (3 off 13 balls) was removed by Mohammad Abbas, after a low catch was brilliantly pouched by Younis Khan at the second slip see West Indies 107 for five in 35.4 overs.

For Pakistan, rookie leg-spinner Shadab Khan became the 227th player to make his Test debut and second from Mianwali after Misbah-Ul-Haq.
