Rubel Hossain Training Hard to Push for a Spot in the Australia Series

Bangladesh fast bowler Rubel Hossain who got a freakish injury following Bangladesh’s defeat to India in the Champions Trophy Semi-final has resumed training in a bid to push for a return to the Test squad for the upcoming Test series against Australia. Hossain broke his jaw and had to undergo a surgery after a freakish accident in Bangladesh team hotel following the Champions Trophy Semi final against India.

Rubel collided with a door at the Bangladesh team hotel in Birmingham after Bangladesh’s loss to India in the Semi-final but it remains unclear that how the injury actually occurred. The 27-year-old pacer is the most experienced fast bowler in the unit and has undergone rigorous fitness regime in preparing for the series against Australia and the tour of South Africa which will follow.

“I am fully fit now and bowled off a full run-up today. There is still a lot of time. Yes, I missed a few sessions but I will try to cover it,” Rubel said. He doesn’t boast of a particularly good record in the limited overs format but made a successful return to the Test squad against New Zealand earlier in the year. He is currently working with the Bangladesh bowling coach Courtney Walsh to get his rhythm back.

“I had a few breaks in my career which has been the main reason why I am yet to establish my place in the Test side, as you see my performance in Test cricket is not that good,” Hossain told reporters at Bangladesh’s training camp at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur.

“I also know the reasons and I am working hard to overcome those and trying to improve myself as a bowler in the longer format as well. I can learn many things from (Walsh) because his Test record is outstanding. I will work to learn the craft of how I can maintain a good line and length and how I can be successful against the big teams,” Hossain added.

Hossain has been practising hard on his “butterfly ball”- a form of slower delivery which has grip higher in the fingertips and achieves an emphatic dip due to the lack of rotation and floats to the batsman like a butterfly. Though it might be a pretty useful option in the limited overs format he is not expected to unleash his varieties against Australia which might be his downfall.

“I bowled with a different action against New Zealand and I will try it in the next matches,” It’s okay now, I will also do it in the (Bangladesh Premier League T20 competition) and in the South Africa series if I get the chance,” Rubel said.
