SA vs IND: As South Africa beat India by 4 runs in a thrilling finish at Cape Town, let’s look at some relevant numbers of this match.

Clean sweep:

It’s the first time South Africa whitewashed India in an ODI series. In 2006 they beat India by 4-0 when the first match of the series was washed out. Overall this is the 5th time India faced a whitewash in 3 (or more) match series. India faced a 3-0 whitewash against New Zealand in February 2020, coincidentally the last time South Africa whitewashed an ODI series, was also in Feb-Mar 2020 when they beat Australia by 3-0.

 

Quin-Ton de Kock:

Quinton de Kock (124) smashed another hundred against India. It was the 6th ODI hundred against in India in only 16 innings. Only Sanath Jayasuriya scored more ODI hundreds (7) against India while AB de Villiers, Ricky Ponting, and Kumar Sangakkara also smashed 6 hundreds each. de Kock also completed 1000 runs against India.

Overall it was his 17th ODI hundred in his career. Now he’s second in the tally of most ODI hundred by a wicketkeeper. Only Kumar Sangakkara (23) is ahead of him, Adam Gilchrist had 16.

Catch it, Temba:

Apart from captaincy, Temba Bavuma had a terrific day on the field as well as he took 4 catches in Indian innings. He became the 7th fielder from South Africa to take 4 (or more) catches in an ODI. Kepler Wessels, Ashwell Prince, Graeme Smith, Hashim Amla, and Rilee Rossouw also picked 4 catches in an ODI while Jonty Rhodes holds the world record of most catches (5) by a  non-wicketkeeper, he achieved this feat against West Indies in Mumbai in 1993.

Caught in a trap:

In Indian innings, all 10 batters were dismissed as ‘Caught’. It’s only 5th time happened for India when all 10 batters were dismissed ‘Caught’ in an ODI.

vs Pakistan at Birmingham 2004

vs West Indies at Chennai 2007

vs New Zealand at Dambulla 2010

vs Australia at Canberra 2016

So close yet so far:

This (4-runs) is the closest defeat India faced against South Africa in ODIs. The previous closest defeat in terms of runs was when the Proteas beat India by 5 runs at Kanpur 2015.

KL Rahul has become the first Indian captain to lose the first three ODIs as captain. Dhoni also couldn’t get a win in his first three ODIs but his first match as captain was washed out.
