Sanath Jayasuriya Charged for Smuggling Rotten Betel Nut to India – Report

Yet again a cricketer from Sri Lanka lands in troubled waters. Ironically, once again, it is from former players list, who has got a legendary tag to his name. Okay, spilling the beans, it is the stylish southpaw, Sanath Jayasuriya, who has been charged by the Indian Government for smuggling rotten betel nut to the country.

As per the reports in Dainik Bhaskar, the directorate of revenue intelligence had seized Betel nut worth millions of rupees in Nagpur following which Jayasuriya’s name came to light.

Following it, the revenue intelligence has sent a letter to Sri Lankan government asking Sanath Jayasuriya to visit Mumbai for the further interrogation. The report suggests other two cricketers also involved in the case.
The deputy director of revenue intelligence, Dilip Sivare said the seized betel nut was first brought from Indonesia to Sri Lanka from where it was smuggled to India. Dummy companies have also been formed in Sri Lanka to execute the smuggling, he added.

Further, it comes to know that the legendary figures have used their influence in smuggling the goods in Sri Lanka. But, unfortunately, couldn’t do so in India. Meanwhile, a non-bailable arrest warrant issued against Prakash Goyal. He is a notable businessman in Nagpur, but now, he got his business seized.
After the raid in Nagpur, it came to light that fake documents were prepared for the production. It was shown that the production was being done in Sri Lanka to evade import duty.
What is the use of Rotten Betel Nut?
Actually, there is a 108% import tax if betel nut is imported directly from Indonesia. This import charge is evaded if imports are done from Sri Lanka under the South Asia free trade area.

Indonesia’s rotten betel nut is the most beneficial for the businesspeople in India, as they only have to pay 25% of the original value. And then, it will be mixed with the good quality of betel nut to gain significant profits.
Over the years, Nagpur has become the centre for such activities, as it is easily accessible through rail and road transport. Assam and Madhya Pradesh are the other such cities in India.
