Cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has backed Kuldeep Yadav to get more chances in India’s playing XI in the 50-over format. Kuldeep Yadav is currently playing the third ODI against Australia in Canberra. The Chinaman was picked in place of Yuzvendra Chahal, who went expensive while wicketless in the first two ODIs which India ended up losing.
Kuldeep Yadav has been in the ODI squad but has not got consistent chances in the XI. The reason being that he leaks too many runs which overshadows his knack of picking wickets. In the last ODI against New Zealand, he conceded 84 runs while picked two wickets. In IPL 2020, he featured in only five matches for Kolkata Knight Riders while had an ordinary season.
However, Sanjay Manjrekar believes that Kuldeep Yadav can be the game-changer in the middle-overs. He said that India would not need an extra bowler if the wrist-spinner is included.
“Kuldeep Yadav has in fact fallen away but I really think India should start getting him back in the scheme of things. Purely because he’s a guy who will get you two or three wickets in the middle due to which the opposition lineup may score those 30-40 runs less and you wouldn’t need an extra bowler,” Sanjay Manjrekar said during the Extraaa Innings show.

Sanjay Manjrekar also heaped praise on Kuldeep Yadav’s spin partner Yuzvendra Chahal. Although the short-heightened spinner went expensive, Manjrekar feels Chahal is a key element of the Indian team.
“I have only admiration for this guy. In Australia what he does is that he becomes a more classical legspinner. He gives then leg-spin bit of a rip,” Manjrekar added. “He bowls the googly as well while in Indian conditions, it’s just subtle variation in length more than anything. Just a tremendous cricketer. He’s been consistent in the two formats. We’ve seen in the IPL. He was incredible.”
In the third ODI against Australia, Kuldeep Yadav notched the wicket of Cameron Green and was economical.
