Selectors Will Decide MS Dhoni’s Future in T20I Cricket – Kapil Dev

With the emergence of youngsters in the Indian Premier League (IPL), questions have raised on the place of MS Dhoni in the India T20I side.
In fact, there were a few former Indian players who said Dhoni should not play T20Is as now; he is not the same player which he used to be earlier in this format.

It was evident by the fact Virat Kohli sent Hardik Pandya, Shreyas Iyer and Manish Pandey ahead of Dhoni in the eight over the rain-curtailed game against New Zealand in Thiruvananthapuram. Dhoni didn’t face even a single delivery, which was the first of its kind in the history.
When asked regarding questions raised by him, Dhoni simply played down each comment by calling it as the right of every person to have an opinion.
Amidst this, Kapil Dev, the former India captain has praised Dhoni and has said it will be the selectors who will decide the future of MS Dhoni in the shortest format of the game,
“There is nobody who will play throughout their life. But, I think he (Dhoni) is playing very good. Rest, I leave it to the selectors. They will do a better job than what we have to do. I give an opinion and it will only create confusion in people’s mind. I don’t want to (do that). Let’s leave it to the selectors who are doing this job. They will put a lot of time when he should play and when he shouldn’t play,” he said.
Kapil Dev played it with a straight bat, as he put on the duty on selectors, without having a clear view.
Though it is a fact that from past a few months, Dhoni seems to have lost the Midas touch, primarily due to his rotation in the batting order. Barring top three (in most cases), no other batsmen now seem to have a permanent position, and sometimes the team has to pay the price for this experimentation from the Indian skipper.
Dhoni is yet to be given a proper role in the team and just left to experiment, as we saw in the previous series.

Still, it is a fact that MS Dhoni’s glove work is probably the best in the country, the level of which might come down if he leaves any of the two formats he plays now. Team India called up Rishab Pant to the side for the T20I series against England followed by complete series against Windies, but he later got dropped from the side due to failures with the India A in different series.
In short, India need Dhoni until the time selectors don’t get a replacement to fill his shoes.
