Shane Watson’s test career might not have glittered like gold, but it definitely had a few bright spots. Watson in his brief career did a decent job for Australia as he played the role of an all rounder. Despite not having the best of statistics, Watson was one individual who took pride in wearing the Baggy Green.
David Warner, Watson’s close friend and teammate feels that the all-rounder is an inspiring figure and is a role model for kids. “He has been unfortunate with injuries but he’s had a great career, and he’s always a guy who wears his heart on his sleeve and every time he goes out there for Australia. He wears that Baggy Green with pride and dignity,” Warner was quoted saying to cricket.com.au.
“I’ve had the privilege of playing alongside him, I’ve learned a lot from Shane and he’s definitely a role model for kids. The way he’s evolved from where he first started to being a leader in the team is fantastic and what he’s achieved is a credit to him. Sometimes it is quite sad as a teammate to hear the scrutiny that goes on,” Warner said.
“At the end of the day, people have to write articles and players either take it positively or they dislike some of the comments. But at the end of the day, we’ve all got a job, and if people deep down know Shane behind closed doors, and not just what you see on the field, you know he’s got a heart of gold, and you know he’ll do anything to help you. Whether it’s about cricket or family related, he’s a guy you can always count on,” the southpaw continued.
“He’s always been there for me in the tough times and I’ve appreciated it, but any kid that looks up to somebody should look up to Shane Watson,” concluded Warner.
