Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay became the 6th Indian opening pair to score 1000 plus runs in Test matches on Day 1 of the only between India and Bangladesh on Wednesday 10th June, 2015. The feat came when Indian captain Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to bat first as his openers restored captain’s faith in them.

After his consistent performance in the 2012-13 domestic season, Shikar Dhawan was rewarded with a call-up to the Indian Test squad in February 2013 for the four-match series against Australia. He was the third-choice opener in the squad which consisted of Test regulars Virender Sehwag and Murali Vijay at that point of time. India chose Sehwag and Vijay over Dhawan in the first two Tests. India won both the matches, but Sehwag was dropped from the squad for the remaining two Tests of the series owing to his poor form. As no replacement was named in the squad for Sehwag, which made Dhawan the favorite to take his place in the third Test.

Dhawan made his debut in the third Test at Mohali on 14 March 2013, receiving the cap from Sachin Tendulkar who said to him: “We have known you as a very gutsy player in domestic cricket, now we hope to see you as a gutsy player in international cricket, so show us some guts.” Dhawan scored the fastest century ever on Test debut, off 85 balls, and also broke the long-held record of highest score by an Indian debutant held by Gundappa Viswanath (137 vs Australia at Kanpur, 1969) and was finally dismissed for 187 (174 balls).

He has played 13 Tests for India so far, scoring 823 runs with 2 centuries and as many half centuries, with the highest score of 187.

Vijay made his Test debut against Australia in the Fourth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, in Nagpur, in November 2008. He was selected for the match after Gautam Gambhir received a one-Test ban for elbowing Shane Watson in the Third Test of the same series in Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi. Vijay was participating in a Ranji trophy match at the time, and made his Test debut on the final day of that match.

Of Vijay’s technique, former Australian captain Allan Border said “His defensive shots are so assured. And he looks comfortable of both front and back foot. And when he attacks, he doesn’t go hard at the deliveries. I can see why this young man is playing”.

The 31 year old has played 31 Tests for India till now, scoring 2188 runs with 5 centuries and 10 half-centuries, his highest score being 167.

Here is a list of top 6 Indian opening partnerships, consisting of greats like Sunil Gavaskar and Virendar Sehwag, who have scored more than 1000 runs in Tests and made India proud.
