India’s limited-overs opener Shikhar Dhawan is likely to miss the tour of West Indies as he is yet to recover from the thumb fracture that he had suffered ruing World Cup. Dhawan recently shared a picture on Twitter in which he wrote that he is recovering well. Although, the injured part is still covered.

This clearly means that Dhawan is yet to get fit and will need a few more weeks to attain fitness. The Indian selection committee is set to name the squad for the tour of West Indies next week and Dhawan could miss out on a place due to injury. He is expected to be fit next month.
South Africa A squad is set to tour India later next month and Dhawan might play that series after being declared fit.

Since he isn’t a part of Test squad now, Dhawan will be available for the ‘A’ series that will also be a chance for him to prove his fitness after being out of action for few weeks.
He had suffered an injury during his century knock against Australia during the World Cup. At first, the team management wanted him to be part of the squad, given that he will be fit for the knockout matches.
However, there were clear signs that his injury will need time to heel and later, selectors called up Rishabh Pant to replace the opener.
In his absence, KL Rahul was moved up and he opened the innings along with Rohit Sharma. Although, this left a hole in the middle order and still, team India hasn’t found a suitable number 4 batsman.
Since Dhawan is unlikely to tour West Indies, Mayank Agarwal is expected to retain his place in the team as the third opener. He had replaced an injured Vijay Shankar in the World Cup squad.
In other changes, there are high chances that Dinesh Karthik and Kedar Jadhav will be dropped from the squad and young guns like Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Krunal Pandya are expected to be given a chance.

There is no clarity over the future of MS Dhoni as well. He is expected to announce his retirement before the team selection but he continues to play, he will be the lead wicket-keeper in the squad with Rishabh Pant as his deputy.
