India’s limited-overs opener Shikhar Dhawan, who is missing the ongoing T20I series against West Indies, might miss out on playing the ODIs as well. As per a report in Mumbai Mirror, the 34-year-old s not fully fit, which could open the doors for as many as four players. Likes of Mayank Agarwal, Shubman Gill and Prithvi Shaw are in the fray to replace him. Sanju Samson, who replaced Dhawan for T20Is, is also in line but might have a tough chance as he isn’t an opener.
Dhawan had suffered a thigh injury while attempting a catch during Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He was confirmed to miss the T20Is but was expected to return for ODIs. Dhawan recently shared a video of him doing a gym session and was expected to be fit bu looks like he will need some more time to be match fit.
Starting from Samson, the 25-year-old has been part of ODI squad but is yet to make his debut. If the selectors retain him, he will bat in the middle-order.
Mayank is yet to play ODIs but has established himself as regular opener along with Rohit Sharma. He is waiting for his opportunity in white-ball cricket. Mayank had joined India’s World Cup squad in the second half of the tournament as a replacement for Vijay Shankar.
Gill earned his maiden national call-up earlier this year – for the tour of New Zealand. He made his debut in ODIs and scored 16 runs in two innings. He was a part of the T20I squad as well but did not make his debut. As per reports then, Mayank was called up to New Zealand but he suffered an injury. It also forced him to miss quarter-final of Ranji Trophy for Karnataka.
Shaw’s name is also considered as a replacement for Dhawan but he does not hold a strong chance. Last month, he played his first competitive match after serving his eight-month ban. Opening the innings for Mumbai in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Shaw scored 63. He followed up with scores of 30, 64, 30 and 53. On Monday, he scored 66 on the opening day of Ranji Trophy 2019/20.
Selectors are expected to name Dhawan’s replacement soon. The first ODI will be played December 15 in Chennai. Vizag and Cuttack will host the next two ODIs on December 18 and 22, respectively.
