Madan Lal, former Indian pacer, has suggested Kolkata Knight Riders’ captain Dinesh Karthik to open the innings with Shubman Gill to improve the team’s batting performance in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020.
Shubman Gill has opened the innings with Sunil Narine for KKR in the last three matches. But they have failed to set up an opening partnership as Narine has lost his wickets early.
Gill has scored 9, 0 and 15 runs against MI, SRH and MI respectively. As a result, the pressure adds to the middle-order to build the innings.
While talking to Sports Tak, Madan Lal observed that Narine was out of form so Dinesh Karthik, who bats in the middle-order, should promote himself to the opening position. He reckons that Shumbman Gill needs a proper opening batsman to put up a good score on the board in the powerplay.
“Sunil Narine is not able to play the big hits now. It would be better if Dinesh Karthik himself opens instead of Narine, so that his batting order does not go that far back.”
“I will not open with Sunil Narine. I will have a proper batsman with Shubman Gill because in the first 6 overs even if a proper batsman comes, they will score 50-60 runs.”
Madan Lal advise to KKR:
On being asked if Eoin Morgan had batted too low in the batting order, the 1983 World Cup-winning pacer responded that the Kolkata Knight Riders captain has to either open the batting or bat behind Eoin Morgan and Andre Russell.
“Dinesh Karthik has to open or he needs to bat after Morgan and Russell. His team might suffer if he tries to bat above Morgan and Russell in the middle order.”
Madan Lal also observed that because of not having a good opening partner, Shubman Gill is also suffering as he has been unable to score big.
“Shubman Gill has not been able to make the big runs because he does not have a good opener along with him,” he said.
Shubman Gill snared unbeaten 70 runs to guide his team to victory against SRH. In the last match against Rajasthan Royals, he scored 47 runs to help his team to set up 175 runs target.
