Sourav Ganguly Reveals Who Was Virat Kohli’s Choice For Team India Head Coach

Sourav Ganguly, one of the members of Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), has finally revealed who was Virat Kohli’s choice as Team India captain. The three-member panel comprising Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman along with Ganguly was once again given the duty to select the head coach for Team India this year after Anil Kumble’s acrimonious exit.

And while the BCCI and board consistently said that the decision to select the coach would be solely CAC’s, the panel decided to take Kohli’s inputs. The CAC was expected to announce the name of the coach on July 10, the day on which the interviews were taken but it deferred the decision to an unconfirmed date, citing its wish to talk to Kohli before taking the final call.

However, after the Committee of Administrators asked the BCCI not to delay the process, the CAC had to name the new coach on the very next day and Ravi Shastri was appointed the head coach.

Shastri was the front runner to bag the job but earlier reports had suggested that Kohli wanted Virender Sehwag as the head coach. However, Ganguly has quashed all the reports by revealing the captain’s choice.

“That’s what Virat Kohli wanted. He’d be happy to have Ravi (Shastri) with him. Wish them all the best. They have two years ahead of them before the World Cup and hope they have a good one,” Ganguly told India Today.

‘Kohli Regaining Form A Matter of Time’

Virat Kohli was in prime form in the home series, scoring three double centuries in as many series. Prior to that, he had scored his maiden double century against West Indies. However, his form dipped in the four-Test series against Australia where he managed just 46 runs in three Tests before missing the final Test due to injury.

India has not played any Test since then and Ganguly feels it’s only a matter of time before the India skipper regains his form.

“It’s only a matter of time. He’s (Virat Kohli) a fantastic player and wish him all the best,” Ganguly said.

Ganguly also said that India can go in with three spinners in the first Test against Sri Lanka.

“It will be an interesting to see who’s the second spinner. I won’t be surprised if Ashwin and Kuldeep (Yadav) are the two spinners.

“Three spinners are possible. Hardik Pandya can play along with Umesh (Yadav) or (Mohammed) Shami. Ashwin, Jadeja and Hardik can all bat. It gives an opportunity to play three spinners. if Virat can win the toss and bat, then three spinners will come into play,” Ganguly said.

The former India skipper also backed India to thrash the hosts and inflict a 3-0 whitewash.

“This is not the best Sri Lankan team India will be playing for a while. Even the last one was a stronger one. India are a far superior side on paper and in terms of quality as well. It won’t be that difficult for India to win the series. India are firm favourites. India have a big possibility to win 3-0,” Ganguly concluded.
