South Africa name squad for West Indies Tests; Tahir dropped

Sidharth Gulati / 03 December 2014

Cricket South Africa (CSA) have named 14-member squad for the three-match Test series against West Indies that gets under-way on December 17th.

The squad features the regular names that have been a part of the team from quite a long-time. JP Duminy has been ruled out due to injury but is expected to get fit for the ODIs, that will take place after the Tests. Imran Tahir has been dropped because of poor form. Robin Peterson makes his way back into the squad after playing his last Test nine months back against Australia earlier this year.

Dane Piedt, who took eight wickets on his debut against Zimbabwe earlier this year, also remains in the injury list along-with JP Duminy.

Kagiso Rabada, Temba Bavuma Stiaan van Zyl are the three uncapped players in the squad and it looks all set that van Zyl will make his debut in place of JP Duminy at number seven.

During an interview, Andrew Hudson, the selection convener of CSA said:

“We have been very pleased with the way the Test squad has performed in its last three outings in Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. Part of this has been the result of consistency in the selection process and also establishing a pecking order. Stiaan was the reserve batsman against Zimbabwe so he is the logical choice to replace Duminy.

“At the same time we want to bring players whom we have identified as having international potential into the team environment. This is a policy that has worked well in the past with the likes of Faf du Plessis, Dean Elgar and Quinton de Kock, among others.

“Both Temba and Kagiso have impressed at franchise and South Africa A level and they are ready to be considered for senior international duty.”

Hashim Amla (capt), AB de Villiers (vice-capt), Alviro Petersen, Dean Elgar, Faf du Plessis, Stiaan van Zyl, Quinton de Kock, Vernon Philander, Robin Peterson, Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, Temba Bavuma, Kyle Abbott, Kagiso Rabada

Probable Playing XI:

Alviro Petersen, Dean Elgar, Faf du Plessis, Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers, Quinton de Kock, Stiaan van Zyl, Vernon Philander, Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, Kyle Abbott
