South African paceman Marchant de Lange Joins English County Side Glamorgan

Young South African speedster Marchant de Lange has signed a three-year deal with English county team Glamorgan. Initially, Glamorgan planned to sign him under the Kolpak rule but due to lack of ‘required’ international games under his belt, they had to take the other route. De Lange made his international debut against Sri Lanka in 2011 in a Test match and has played a total of 2 Tests, 4 ODIs and 6 T20Is.

“He’s got a bit of X-factor, he’s a match-winner,” said Glamorgan head coach Robert Croft. “He’s got pace, and he’s got aggression.”

This decision, however, means that the 26-year-old would not be eligible to play for his country anymore, at least until the time the contract expires or gets terminated. His wife played a crucial role in the transition as her British passport enabled the fast bowler to gain a UK visa.

He will be required to give up his county deal or re-register as an overseas player in order to return to the national side. Playing with the UK visa gives him the freedom to represent Glamorgan in all domestic competition but will disallow him from returning to South Africa and join the domestic circuit again as a local player as he would be classified as an ‘overseas’ player.

“He’s at the right age and stage of his career to come across here and make an impact for us,” Croft told BBC Wales Sport.

“When you’re looking at winning matches in four-day cricket, 20 wickets is the challenge and he’s a wicket-taker, but his form in one-day cricket has been very good as well.”

“When you are looking at winning matches in four-day cricket, twenty wickets is the challenge and Marchant is a wicket-taker, but his performances in one-day cricket have also been impressive and he will be a great addition to our squad,” he added.

De Lange could make his debut in the opening Championship match against Northamptonshire at Northampton on Friday, 7 April,

Glamorgan chief executive Hugh Morris told the club’s AGM that the county would be unlikely to sign another overseas player for the T20 Blast unless financial projections improve.
