How many times you have witnessed a chasing team losing a match with less than run a ball in last two overs were needing with 6 wickets left in hand and still ending up a boundary runs short of win. And that was happened in the Final Match of UltraTech Cement Super 4’s Twenty20 Tournament where Southern Express beat Udarata Rulers by 4 runs to find out an entry into Champions League T20 Qualifiers.
First, the Udarata Rulers chosen to bowl after winning the toss. With the top 4 of Southern Express batsmen, Dickwell, Kusal Perera, Mubarak and Lanka getting into 20s helped them towards a big total. But a middle order collapse let them down a score than what they expected. But late blitz from the lower order helped them to a decent total of 161 for 8 in 20 overs. Mubarak top scored with 34 for Southern Express, Ajanta Mendis and Gururatne picked up 3 wickets each.
Later chasing 162, Rulers got off to a brilliant start with openers Shehan Jayasuria and Upal Tharanga put on 95 in just 10.2 overs before Tharanga the top scorer of the innings got out for 62. Rulers needed 34 runs in last 6 overs with 8 wickets in hand. And slowly the equation brought down to 11 runs needing off last two overs with just 4 wickets been lost.
Chamara Silva and Gunaratne were at crease and Captian Malinga to bowl the 19th over. Malinga once against showed his ability at death as his over produced just 3 runs and getting wicket of Silva. The victory was still in sight of batting team with 8 runs needed from last over to be bowled by Pathirana which was started off with a wide. But the first two legal deliveries produced wickets as Rulers needed 7 from 4.
The third ball produced a single and the fourth resulted in 3rd wicket of the over makes Rulers needing 6 runs from last two deliveries with 2 wickets in hand. On the final ball 5 runs were needed and Prasad who was on strike failed to hit and Kulasekara ended getting run-out, as Southern Express sneak into a 4-run win.
The other two teams participated in the tournament were Western Troopers and Yaal Blazers which was held by double round robin method and the topper qualifying for the final and other team through an eliminator between the teams ending 3rd and 4th.
