Sri Lanka won the two-match T20 series 2-0 against Bangladesh by registering a thrilling three wicket win of the final delivery in Chittagong on Friday.
Chasing 121 to win, Sri Lanka kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were pegged back considerably by the Bangladesh bowlers as visitors were struggling at 50/6 at one stage only to be resurrected by Kumar Sangakkara and Thisara Perera who kept the scoreboard ticking as Sri Lanka reached went past the Bangladesh total in the final ball of the innings.
Kumar Sangakkara was the top scorer with a resolute 37, while Thisara Perera smashed a 28-ball 35 to keep Sri Lanka in the game.
Earlier, Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bat first. Sri Lanka’s wrecker-in-chief fast bowler Lasith Malinga picked up three wickets, as Sri Lanka bundled Bangladesh for a miserable 120. With those three wickets Malinga became the highest wicket taker in T20 cricket.
Malinga’s new-ball partner Nuwan Kulasekara and offspinner Sachithra Senanayake also got two wickets each as hosts kept on losing wickets at regular interval at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury stadium.
For the hosts Bangladesh Sabbir Rahman, 22, who was on debut, top-scored with 26 before he was last man to be dismissed. Anamul Haque was the other main contributor with 24.
Bangladesh hardly made a recovery after Tamim Iqbal and Shamsur Rahman gave their wickets away in the first two overs.
Tillakratne Dilshan, who surprisingly opened the bowling, got a wicket in the very first over as Shamsur gave Sri Lanka’s skipper Dinesh Chandimal an easy catch. This was the first of Chandimal’s four catches in the innings!
Tamim then followed his opening partner when he was dismissed four balls later caught by Mendis off Nuwan Kulasekara’s bowling.
Senanayake then jolted Bangladesh’s middle-order with the wickets of Shakib Al Hasan (12) and Anamul in consecutive overs to leave the hosts reeling at 41-4 after six overs.
Things went from bad to worse for Bangladesh as it soon became 59/6. Ajantha Mendis picke up Nasir Hossain’s wicket, and Mahmudullah was run out.
It was followed by a rescue act from debutant Sabbir and skipper Mashrafe Mortaza (17 off 10 balls), as the duo took Bangladesh past the 100-run mark.
The fact that seven of the batsmen from Bangladesh failed to reach even double-figures in a match showed how poorly hosts performed with the bat in must win to draw the series. Sri Lanka had won the first T20 International by two runs.
Bangladesh made two changes in this match as they brought in Sabbir and Mahmudullah in place of Mithun Ali and Sohag Gazi .
On the other hand, Sri Lanka made a solitary change by bringing in all-rounder Angelo Perera in place of legspinner Seekkuge Prasanna.
Both the teams will now participate in a three ODI series in Dhaka starting from Monday.
