The Story
It was a double delight moment for Pakistan cricket fans when it was announced that a World XI side will visit Pakistan as a measure to revive cricket in the country soon after Pakistan’s stunning 180-run win over arch-rivals India in theChampions Trophy final in London a few weeks ago.
Pakistan has not hosted an international team for a full tour after the 2009 terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore. Consequently, the Men in Green has been forced to play their home games in UAE, leaving the cricket crazy fans back home high and dry.
Now, a similar initiative will be taken forward in Sri Lank as well. The Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) has announced that it will host a charity match between World XI and Sri Lanka XI. The teams will comprise of present and retired overseas stars.
Two World XI Games in September
While the dates of the planned three-match T20 series between Pakistan and a World XI in Lahore is yet to confirmed although it remains assured that the event will take place in September, the Lankan cricket board has scheduled to play the one-off T20 match on September 8 at the R. Premadasa Stadium.
The match that will be played two days after the one off T20I between Sri Lanka and India. The tour, which is currently witnessing its Test leg, will culminate on September 6 at the R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo.
“The negotiations are going on with the overseas players and we will be able to confirm the names soon,” the SLC source told Cricbuzz.
The funds collected from the game will proceed towards the victims of the recent flood and the patients suffering from the chronic kidney disease that has caused more than 20,000 deaths in the last 20 years.
