Virat Kohli-led India post 399 for three in 90 overs thanks to the brilliant century from Shikhar Dhawan, before Cheteshwar Pujara went on to register his twelfth hundred — to pile up the miseries for Sri Lanka skipper Rangana Herath, as the hosts are already down to ten men, after losing out batting all-rounder Asela Gunaratne owing to left-handed thumb injury.

Interestingly, India also registered the highest score against Sri Lanka in the away fixtures as well, on Day One of the first Test of the three-match series, as hosts bowlers struggled in all-three-sessions of the day, except pace spearhead Nuwan Pradeep, who bagged the only three wickets of the day.

While marching into the numbers, in the 2009-10 season, India went on to post its highest ever total of 417 for two in a Test match (on day one) against the same opposition in Kanpur.

During the ongoing Seagram’s Royal Stag Mega Cricket Cup, India batters smashed the hosts’ bowlers all around the park while finishing the day at the run-rate of 4.43.

The left-handed batsman Dhawan blasted 190 off 168 balls — to provide an early impetus for his side, in order to make a significant mark on the 45-odd day tour which is comprised of three Tests, five One-day Internationals and a solitary Twenty20 Internationals which would mark the end of a tour on September 6.

At stumps on Day One, Pujara remained unbeaten on 144 off 267 deliveries which further saw Ajinkya Rahane not out on 39 off 94 balls.
