Shashi / 09 August 2014

On the crucial second day Pakistan managed to get 451 runs on the board with a ton from Younis Khan (177 runs). Sri Lanka opened their run account on the second day. At the stumps of the second day, Sri Lanka were standing at a total of 99 runs for the loss of 1 wickets. Pakistan have given their full strength to stop them, but somehow failed today. Let’s see how who saves them in bowling side as Younis Khan saves them from a big batting disaster.

After the second day SangakkaraSilva batting duo started their partnership strongly. Pakistan came out from the dressing room with the age-old mantra ‘Early wickets, early wickets’. Junaid Khan, Sayeed Ajmaal worked hard to take an early wicket, but Silva gradually gave momentum on the scoreboard, where Sangakkara was playing cautiously. He was going to established himself as the spinal cord of the batting lineup. Mohammad Talha joined the bowling crew to break this crucial partnership and got success at 47th over as he took the Silva’s wicket. Silva pushes at a length delivery and slightly pushes inside the line, he gets a thick outside edge that is dying towards the right of the keeper. Sarfraz dives to his right and plucks it with one hand. After this wicket Pakistan seemed much relived. Mahela Jayawardane took Silva’s place. Kaushal Silva was the only wicket to fall, to a brilliant one-handed catch by the keeper, but Sangakkara has continued to pile on the runs. Mahela walked in to fireworks show that held up play for around five minutes and looked a touch eager to start with. He also survived a close lbw shout with the review coming to his aid. Pakistan still have a healthy lead in their favour and they will hope to stay disciplined. .At the end of 50th over Sri Lanka scored 162 runs for the loss of 2 wickets. Before lunch Jayawardane contributed 18 runs and Sangakkara contributed 63 runs. At lunch, the score was 174 for the loss of 2 wickets.

Rain interrupted second session was also dominated by Sri Lankans. In the second session Sangakkara looked very aggressive. Pakistan was unsuccessful in this second session too. They did not took any wicket in this session. Earlier rain has stopped the proceedings couple of time before at Galle. A sharp shower has descended after Lunch and the ground was under cover. 35 minutes was lost at that time.  After the brake players resumed play, but after few overs it was raining again.  The players went back but it was a short delay. But they were not third time lucky as the third delay came before the tea and it was raining heavily. The tea session has been extended and finally it was called off at 4.32 local time. Sangakkara and Jayawardene played risk free cricket and put Sri Lanka in the driver’s seat after day of the Test match. Though it is looking like the match heading towards a draw. But cricket is an unpredictable game. It can surprise us anytime. Sri Lanka scored 252 runs for the loss of 2 wickets at the end of the day.  Let’s see where this Sangakkara, the run machine of Sri Lanka stops tomorrow.
