Star Sports to Telecast India-Bangladesh ODI Series

Sampath Bandarupalli / 15 June 2014

The India Bangladesh One Day International Series is set to be telecatsed in Star Sports. At a stage it looked like no one going to buy the rights which meant only Doordarshan will be telecasting. But a day before the series is all set to start, the Star Sports have been announced as the Broadcaster.

However, amount of the dealership hasn’t been announced yet. The tweet from Aakash Chopra, Former Indian Cricketer and Commentator in Star Sports panel has confirmed the things and ended the dilemma over the telecasting.

Indian viewers feared that they wouldn’t be able to watch the action live after Gazi Sports, the official rights holders of cricket in Bangladesh failed to get negotiate deals with either Sony Six or Star Sports. With Sony, who are also telecasting the 2014 FIFA World Cup showed no interest at all as they feared the timings might get clashed.

And also Star Sports had offered Rs 5 crore for the 3-match series, a sum which was considered ‘paltry’ by Gazi TV. That amount looked very low as the same Star Sports will pay BCCI Rs 30 crore for each match India plays at home.

Salahuddin Chowdhury, CFO and head of operations of Gazi Group, was quoted over it saying, “The Star offer is too less in comparison to the cost of the rights.

However, after a bit time it seems that finally Star and Gazi group have arrived at a deal that will allow the Indian viewers to watch all the action. In his tweet, Aakash Chopra has also mentioned that commentary will be available, both in English as well as in Hindi.

The matches will be played on the dates of 15th, 17th and 19th of June all been held in Dhaka. India has named a weakened side having rested seven of its senior players including MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin which was also a reason for no one showed interest for grabbing Broadcasting rights earlier including Star Sports.

Apparently, Akash Copra has deleted that tweet. So we will wait for further information from either Star or Gazi TV.
