Stats: Top 5 highest indivdual scores by captains in Test matches

In the history of Indian cricket, 32 captains have led Indian team in test matches . Virat Kohli by scoring a double century in the ongoing first test match against West Indies became the first Indian captain to score a century outside India. Scoring big runs being the captain of the Indian team is a huge achievement. Here we look at the top 5 Indian captains with highest scores in test matches.

  1. MS Dhoni 224 against Australia

MS Dhoni is the highest scorer as an Indian test captain. He scored 224 against Australia at Chennai. MS Dhoni scored the 224 runs on 22nd February 2013 during the Border- Gavaskar series held in India. During that innings, he faced 265 balls in which he smashed 25 fours and 6 sixes which helped India to post a huge total. MS Dhoni spent 365 minutes at the crease on a tough Chennai wicket. He retired from test cricket in 2014.

2. Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar the highest runs scorer in international cricket was the second highest scorer as an Indian captain. He led the Indian team in 25 matches out of which he won four matches, losing 9 and drawing 12. Sachin Tendulkar made 217 against New Zealand at Ahmedabad. Sachin Tendulkar scored the 217 runs on 29th October 1999. During that innings, he faced 344 balls and also smashed 29 boundaries. He spent 494 minutes at the crease. His innings helped India to post a big total of 583 for 7 decl. The Indian match ended in a draw.

3. Sunil Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar one of all time greats of Indian cricket was the third highest scorer as an Indian captain. He led Indian team 47 test matches out of which the team won 9 matches and lost 8, drawing 30. His ability to play solid against a strong West Indies fast bowling line up stood him apart. Sunil Gavaskar made 205 against West Indies at Mumbai. His 205 runs as a captain came on 1 December 1978. During that innings, he faced 342 balls smashing 29 fours and 2 sixes. He spent 397 minutes at the crease during that innings.

4. MAK Pataudi

MAK Pataudi another great of Indian cricket was the fourth highest scorer in test matches. He was the 14th Indian test captain. MAK Pataudi led the Indian team in 40 matches, winning 9, losing 19 and drawing 12. He was one great during 1960’s. MAK Pataudi made 203 not out at Delhi. His 203 not out as a captain came on 8th February 1964. During that innings, he smashed 23 fours and 2 sixes. Pataudi spent 430 minutes at the crease during that innings.

5. Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli the 32nd captain of the Indian test team became the fifth highest scorer in test matches. He took over from MS Dhoni in 2014 and led the Indian team in 10 matches, winning 5 , losing 2 and drawing 3 matches. He made his highest score as a captain beating his 169 against Australia. Kohli surpassed Mohammad Azharuddin to enter into the list of top scorers list. Kohli scored 200 during the ongoing first test match against West Indies played at Antigua. During that innings he faced 283 balls, smashing 24 boundaries. He spent a lot of time during the double century knock. Out of his 12 centuries, 9 of them have come outside of India which shows that he has the hunger to score big runs
