Sunil Gavaskar and Simon Doull takes a Dig at ICC’s New Rule

The International Cricket Council (ICC) introduced some new rules and regulations just over a month ago. Amongst all of them, the most hilarious was the one which gives five runs penalty to the opponent team, if a team is found guilty of ‘fake-fielding’. It implies that on every occasion when a fielder fakes even though he is nowhere near the ball to get the batsmen in a state of confusion while another fielder collects it, will cost them a five runs penalty. Though it happens once in a while, it can change the course of the game.
The ongoing match between India and Sri Lanka witnessed the same situation when Dinesh Chandimal put on a slide the ball while he was nowhere near. In the 53rd over of the match, Bhuvneshwar Kumar played one through the covers off Rangana Herath to which Sri Lankan captain Chandimal put in a slide, while he was not close enough to collect the ball.
The umpires then warned Chandimal; however, no penalty runs were awarded to India. Indian captain Virat Kohli seemed furious and was seen gesturing to the camera for those five runs.
The issue was later taken up by the commentators Sunil Gavaskar and Simon Doull, who took a dig at the ICC’s new rule.
On the very next ball, Bhuvneshwar miscued a shot to which Gavaskar jokingly said:
“He (Bhuvneshwar Kumar) missed the shot so the fielding side should get 5 penalty runs as he faked it.”
To which Doull replied:
“Waiting for Herath to bowl a quicker delivery and that will be fake bowling pretending to be a spinner and he cannot bowl quick.”
However, Gavaskar believes that:
“The sooner it is done away with the better; it’s absolutely an unbelievable rule.”
