Suryakumar Yadav’s exclusion from India’s squad for T20I for the upcoming Australian tour came as a surprise to many experts – and fans as he has been one of the most consistent batsmen for Mumbai Indians (MI) over the past three years since 2018 averaging above 30 in each of last three IPLs. He has done well in the domestic circuit too playing for Mumbai as he has an average over 40 in first-class and 35 in List A fixtures.
Yadav has continued his impressive run for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2020 scoring 374 runs in 13 matches averaging 41.55 and was in contention to earn his maiden national call-up this year.
Suryakumar Yadav Should Wait For Opportunity – Ravi Shastri
However, Suryakumar Yadav failed to make the cut in at least T20I squad as the Sunil Joshi-led selection panel announced India’s ODI, T20I, and Test squads for the Australia tour which gets underway next month in November. The stylish right-hander’s exclusion from the T20I squad was met with disappointment from several experts and former cricketers.
Indian head coach Ravi Shastri recently broke his silence on his absence in the squad for the Australia tour. The coach had earlier praised the 30-year-old right-handed batsman on Twitter after his match-winning knock of 43-ball 79 against RCB and suggested the MI star to be patient and wait for his opportunity to arrive.
He further explained that the Indian team is currently packed with talent and experience, and it’s difficult for him to make a cut.
“That’s why we say to these youngsters – be patient. Like Suryakumar there are 3-4 other players on the fringe but when you have a team that is packed with talent and experience it becomes very difficult to get in,” Ravi Shastri told Times Now in an exclusive interview.
“I remember period in my career when 1-6 in the Indian batting line-up everyone was certain of their places and it was difficult for anyone to penetrate that middle-order and yet you had some people who were scoring tons of runs in domestic cricket and knocking at the door,” he added.
Suryakumar Yadav notched up 512 runs in 14 games averaging 36.57 for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2018 striking at over 133. He followed it up with 424 runs in 16 games last season averaging 32.61 at a strike rate of over 130. In IPL 2020, he has once again contributed to MI’s success with 374 runs in 13 games so far at a strike rate of over 153 and an average of 41.55.
Suryakumar Yadav And Other Youngsters Should Be Patient And Not Disappointed-Ravi Shastri
Ravi Shastri said players like Suryakumar Yadav need to stay positive and try to progress performing on each game to ensure that they can make the most of the opportunities which come their way.
“For all the youngsters I have one message – be patient and when you get your opportunity grab it with both hands. That’s the time you don’t mess up. Instead of being disappointed be positive in your mindset that when you get the opportunity make the most of it,” said Shastri.
“If you look at this team that’s going if any of the players in the batting line-up had been dropped you would be asking how are they dropped,” he explained.
Apart from Suryakumar Yadav’s ability to clear the boundary easily and tend to rotate the strike well, he is a versatile batsman and can also be used as a floater in the middle-order. He has batted across many positions in IPL.
But mostly at No. 3 and has proved his worth most of the time. However, his wait for a national call-up is likely to get extended for now as he wasn’t selected for Australian tour by the Sunil Joshi led selection committee.
