Teachers’ Day special: Top 5 Indian cricketers  and their childhood coach

Today is 5th September, the day on which Indian society celebrates the contribution of teachers. The 5th DSeptember is the birthday of India’s second President Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was a humble man and taught many students in his life so, his students wanted him to pay tribute. So, the day of his birthday was announced as Teachers’ Day in India and the country celebrates it every year.

In India, cricket is the most popular game and many coaches mentored and gave India greats who helped India to win many laurels and drew respect from the overseas countries.

So Sportzwiki looks at the five great Indian cricketers and their childhood teacher. 

Ajit Agarkar-Ramakant Achrekar:

This Mumbai cricketer made debut at a time when Indian bowling department didn’t have much of pace or swing, Ajit Agarkar had both and he got success in international cricket. When Agarkar retired, he was India’s third highest wicket-taker and was a handy lower-order batsman as well. He was one of the brightest students of Ramakant Achrekar. The master himself described Agarkar a “brilliant prospect”. Yes, the phrase was right for Agarkar.

Agarkar bowled with  pace and swing. He also learnt to reverse, which was his lethal weapon with the old ball. With excellent numbers in the domestic competitions, Agarkar was picked for the ODI team in 1998. A plethora of wickets followed , and he became the then fastest to pick 50 ODI wickets. His finest moment came in Adelaide in 2003, where  he took 6 for 41 to lead India to a Test victory in Australia. Agarkar also recorded an ODI best of 6 for 42 against Australia at the MCG, though India went on to lose the match

Agarkar’s 21 balls 50 against Zimbabwe  and 95 coming at No. 3 hailed him as next Kapil Dev. Agarkar with the infusion of young cricketers in the team was overlooked. But in domestic cricketers, he really played with vigour.   He retired in 2013.

Sachin TendulkarRamakant Achrekar:

The master-blaster Sachin Tendulkar reshaped the imagination of overseas cricket fans about Indian cricket team, who used to lose the match  meekly, found an aggressive batsman in Sachin Tendulkar. In 1994 India’s tour New Zealand Sachin blast the New Zealand batsman to score  a 49 ball 82 run innings.

Sachin dominated the cricket world with his batting. Sachin in his debut Test against Pakistan  he scored 15, but in the second Test, he scored 59 off 172 balls.

His success in Test cricket raised the question in fans’ mind who is the master of Sachin. It was revealed then it is Ramakant Achrekar.  Sachin went on to score more than 30 thousand runs in international cricket and 100 hundred that helped India to win the 2011 World Cup. He retired in 2012.

Sourav Ganguly-Debu Mitra: The Prince of Kolkata was mentored by Debu Mitra who played for  Bengal in Ranji cricket. Debu Mitra is regarded as the guardian of Sourav Ganguly. Ganguly in his debut Test at the Lord’s scored hundred and later become captain of the Indian team.

In ODI cricket Ganguly scored 22 hundred and his aggressive brand of play made him famous in cricket. His cover drive was one of the most famous shots in world cricket.

It was learnt that Debu Mitra travelled with Ganguly wherever he went. But when Ganguly earned fame in international cricket, he never paid tribute to Mitra, a popular gossip in Maidans, where the Eden Gardens is located. However, Ganguly after retirement was  seen with Mitra on many occasions.

Ganguly scored more than seven thousand Test runs and more than ten thousand runs in ODI cricket.

Virat Kohli-Raj Kumar Sharma:  Raj Kumar Sharma has been conferred Dronacharya award by the Indian government for his contribution to Indian cricket team. Virat Kohli, the current Indian cricket team’s batting  sensation is a student of Raj Kumar Sharma.

Virat started his career as Delhi cricketer and captained India U-19 in the 2008 World Cup where he has won the World Cup. Later he mad debut for India. He is now best batsman of the world cricket. In three formats of the game, he has been consistent and prolific. In ODI and T20I he has 50 plus average wherein in Test he has 45 plus average.

In ODI he already scored 25 hundred and already received the ICC ODI Player of the Year and also received the ICC People Choice award in 2012.

Ishant Sharma-Shravan Kumar: The Indian Test bowling is spearhead by Ishant Sharma,the student of Shravan Kumar. The lanky aggressive Indian bowler is a solution of  India’s first bowling problem in Test cricket. Ishant has taken seven wickets at Lord’s  Test in 2014 which helped India to win the match.  He made his debut for India  against Bangladesh in 2007  and in the following series in Australia he had become a trouble maker off Ricky Ponting. He exploited the lively Australian pitch. Now he has 209 Test wickets in 72 Test matches.

In 2015 India’s tour of Sri Lanka  Ishant Sharma helped India to win seasons in the first Test that helped India to win a Test series after 22 years.
