The ICC Twenty20 world cup is a contest that is organised by ICC after a period of every 2 years. Five editions of the tournament have been played successfully so far. The inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup was played in 2007 in South Africa and the Indian team emerged as the winner of that tournament. Sri Lanka are the current world T20 champions.
Lets have a look at the performance of the Indian cricket team in all the World Cups so far-
2007, Winner- India
The inaugural edition of the T20 world cup was played in the year 2007 in South Africa between11 September to 24 September. A total of 12 teams participated in the tournament and 27 matches were played in the tournament. Indian side defeated the arch rivals Pakistan in final match to clinch the trophy.
The first match of the Indian team against Scotland was abandoned due to rain, The second dramatic match ended in a tie. The result was computed when both teams played a “bowl out” contest. Indian team defeated the Pakistani side by 3-0. Harbhajan Singh, Robin Uthappa and Virender Sehwag were the successful bowlers for the team. Indian tem qualified for the super eight stage but lost the first game against New Zealand as they failed to chase a huge target of 191.
In the next match against the English side the Indian batsmen batted brutally throughout the innings and showed no mercy on the England bowlers. The Indian batsman Yuvraj Singh smacked 6 sixes in an over of Stuart Broad and made a world record. India posted a huge total of 218 on the board.
The England side made their best efforts to chase down the target but Indian bowlers managed to defend the total by 18 runs. In a must win game against South Africa Indian managed to defend the score of 153 and qualified for the semi finals against one of the strongest team of that time Australia.
Indian team posted a total of 188 runs on the board riding on the aggressive batting from Yuvraj singh. The Indian team defeated the Australians by margin of 15 runs and qualified for the finals against the Pakistan.
Before the start of the match India suffered a blow as the star batsman Virender Sehwag got injured before the match, Yusuf Pathan replaced him. In the final game Indian team batted first and scored 157 runs.
The Indian bowlers were successful to take regular wickets and did not let any batsmen to settle down. In the historic last over Joginder Sharma defended 13 runs and Indian team emerged as the winner of the inaugural tournament.
2009 Winner- Pakistan
The second edition of the T20 world cup was played in England and the final match was played at the home of cricket the Lords ground. Pakistan defeated the Sri Lankan side in the final match by 8 wickets to clinch their maiden title.
In this edition of the World Cup team India was placed in a weak group along with Bangladesh and Ireland. Indian team won the group stage matches easily to qualify for the super eight stage. At the big stage Indian team failed to win even a single match and was kicked out of the tournament. This tournament was a nightmare for the Indian team.
2010 Winner- England
The third edition of the T20 world cup was played a year later in West Indies who also hosted the 50 over world cup in 2007. The England side defeated the heavyweight Australia in the final match to clinch trophy for the first time.
India was placed in group C along with South Africa and Afganistan. Indian team won both the league stage matches comfortably and advanced to the super eight stage. For the second consecutive time the Indian team failed to register a win at the big stage and was again eliminated from the tournament. This tournament was big failure for the team.
2012 Winner-West Indies
The fourth edition of the World Cup was played in Sri Lanka and it was the first time that the tournament was played in Asia. West Indies team defeated Sri Lanka in the final match to clinch the title for the first time.
Men in Blue had a great start & comfortably registered win in the first two group stage matches defeating Afganistan by a margin of 23 runs and defeating England by big margin of 90 runs. Harbhajan Singh and Piyush Chawla were the stars of the show against England as both shared 6 wickets among them.
India qualified for the super eight stage. In the first match of super eight stage against Australia team India scored 140 runs which the Australian team chased down easily within 15 overs. In the next Super eight game Indian team bowled out Pakistan for just 128 runs and chased the target with three overs to spare.
Virat Kohli was awarded Player of the match award for his innings 78 runs. In the third game of Super eight stage against South Africa, Indian team batted first and scored 152 runs. Though Indian team won the match by 1 run but could not qualify for the semi finals as it was necessary for Indian team to restrict South African team to the score of 121 to qualify for the Semis. India ended their campaign with a win but still they were the losers.
2014 Winner-Sri Lanka
In the fifth edition of the T20 World Cup which was held in Bangladesh, the Sri Lankan team comfortably defeated India in the final match to win the trophy for the first time. Lasith Malinga bowled brilliantly in the death overs to restrict India to a low total.
Indian team kicked off their campaign against the arch- rivals Pakistan.
In the first match team India restricted Pakistan to a score of 130 and then chased down the total easily. Amit Mishra was awarded the Player of the match award for taking 2 crucial wickets. Indian team carried on their winning streak & defeated West Indies in the second match. West Indies team scored 129 runs which India chased down in the last over of the match. Amit Mishra was again awarded the Player of the match award for the second time as he dismissed two West Indies batsmen.
In the next match team India faced the hosts Bangladesh. Batting first the hosts scored 138 runs which the Indian team chased down in the 19th over of the match. In the last group stage match against Australian team India batted first and posted score of 159 runs ont the board, the Australian team continued its poor form in the tournament and whole team was bundled out on a score of mere 86 runs.
Team India qualified for the Semi finals and faced South Africa at Mirpur. South African team batted first and scored 172 runs in their quota of 20 overs. India chased down the target on the first ball of the final over when Kohli smashed a boundary on the first ball of the final over of the match.
With this win team India qualified for the Finals of the T20 world Cup for the second time. Team India faced Sri Lanka in the final match. India could just manage to score 130 runs in the big final. Virat Kohli scored 77 runs and was run out on the final ball of the match. Defending 131 was never easy and Sri Lankan team chased down the total in the 18th over and won the match by 6 wickets.
Kumar Sangakkara was awarded Player of the match award for his match winning innings of 52 runs. Virat Kohli was awarded the Man of the Series award for his brilliant batting performance throughout the tournament scoring 319 runs in 6 matches
