An aspiring 16-year-old cricketer Sam Fraser was found dead on Monday afternoon after falling from a swinging rope into the Macquarie River in New South Wales, Australia at Dubbo.
Moments after the leg-spinner Fraser fell into the river and didn’t resurface, Fraser’s friends screamed out for help and called police at 3pm when they were playing on a rope swing.
After a large gathering arrived at the scene to support the family and emergency crew members, Fraser’s body was found ten meters away from rope swing after 9pm, reports suggested.
Mad for sports, the young Fraser was playing for Macquarie Valley Cricket Council (MVCC) and Dubbo District Junior Cricket Association and had the capability to rise among the ranks while showing his pure class in batting at the junior level cricket.
With tributes pouring in from all corners of the community – the Australian-born multi-talented Fraser, who led Rugby’s U-16 team, had been at river spot to spend some time with his friends when the tragedy happened.
“It wasn’t clear if he’d hit his head or been ‘winded unconscious’,” said Inspector Keith Ridley from Orana Local Area Command, quoted as saying by Daily Telegraph.
As soon as the news of Fraser’s death broke, his friends and relatives took to social media to express their heartbreak.
“If I were to describe Sam, I would describe him as one of the most genuine people who had a great sense of humour. He had the ability to make you laugh and brighten your day up no matter what the circumstances are,” Harry Krueger, one of Sam’s classmates at St. John’s College in Dubbo said.
“It’s with much sadness that we hear of the passing of a beautiful, vibrant and much loved member of the St John’s Junior League family. Sam was a born leader. His influence was immense, both on and off the field. He touched the lives of so many. Everyone who knows Sam will forever remember his cheeky smile and passion for life,” St John’s Dubbo junior rugby league team posted on Facebook.
“Make us proud mate you always made everyone crack a laugh even when they were feeling low…. You will be truly missed by many,” the other post read.
Trevor Thomas, the chairman of Macquarie Valley Cricket Council chairman and mentored Fraser, said it’s the massive loss for our sports community.
“It’s a sad loss, and hard to believe a young life has been taken. And It’s a tragic loss to the community, the cricket community and also his rugby league community,’ Thomas said, quoted as saying by The Daily Telegraph.
There’s a thin line between life and death and Fraser lived his time.
Sam Fraser you will be missed. Rest in Peace.
