Ishant Sharma, India’s pace spearhead is all set to miss the first test against South Africa in Mohali owing to a one match suspension. Sharma’s absence will be a major blow to team India as he could have found great help from the wicket at Mohali. The PCA stadium is among the few venues in India that genuinely assists the pacers.
However, the reason behind Ishant Sharma’ absence from the first test has been the suspension handed over to him by the ICC for breaching the code of conduct. During India’s third test against Sri Lanka in Colombo in August, Ishant had an ugly spat with Sri Lankan players Dhamikka Prasad and Dinesh Chandimal. The spat simply got extremely ugly, and in response, the ICC banned Ishant and Chandimal for one test and ODI respectively.
While Sharma was batting, Prasad bowled consecutive bouncers to the tailender. During the course of completing a run, Sharma gestured towards Prasad, and mocked him to bowl at his head. The two got into an argument and soon an aggressive Chandimal rammed into Sharma, making physical contact. The matter just didn’t end there. As the Indian innings came to a close, Ishant was seen running to the pavilion, with Prasad sprinting behind him all the way up.
Ishant soon dismissed Chandimal in the following innings, and gave him a questionable send off, by slapping his own head. That definitely did not go down too well with the ICC, who handed Sharma a one test suspension post the game.
Below, is the video of that incident:
