The game of cricket has seen some very inspirational captains who have led their team from the front in all situations. Apart from their decision-making skills, they set an example with their batting skills too.
Here we are presenting to you top 10 captains with most runs in One-day internationals.
10. AB de Villiers: 4219 runs
Leading South Africa in 87 matches, de Villiers scored 4219 runs at an astonishing average of over 65. This included 13 centuries and 32 half-centuries. His highest score as a captain is 162*.
9. Sanath Jayasuriya: 4377 runs
The former Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya made 4377 runs in 117 matches as captain from 1999 to 2003. Jayasuriya led Sri Lanka to the knock-out stage of the 2003 cricket world cup, but stepped down from the captaincy after the loss to Australia in the semi-final.. This included 10 centuries and 25 fifties.
Under his captaincy, Sri Lanka won the managed to share the 2002 Champions trophy with India.
8.Allan Border: 4439 runs
Allan Border led Australia in 178 matches. He came reluctantly to the captaincy in a dark age for Australia after Kim Hughes’ tearful resignation at Brisbane in 1984-85, but eventually succeeded as a captain. Under his captaincy, Australia won its first World Cup. As a captain, he scored 4439 runs at an average of 32.16. This included 2 hundreds and 27 fifties.
7. Sourav Ganguly: 5104 runs
One of the most successful captains of India, under Sourav Ganguly’s captaincy his team achieved new heights. From winning the Natwest series in England to reaching the final of 2003 World Cup, Ganguly had some very memorable moments as a captain. Leading India in 147 matches, he scored 5104 runs with 11 centuries and 30 half-centuries.
6. Mohammad Azharuddin: 5239 runs
One more Indian captain in the list, Azharuddin led India in 174 runs and scored 5239 runs at an average of over 39. This included 4 centuries and 37 half-centuries.
5. Graeme Smith: 5416 runs
After becoming the captain of South Africa at a very young age of 22, he led the team from the very front in all situations. Smith, who is the only captain to lead a team a team in over 100 Tests, led South Africa in 150 ODIs and scored 5416 runs at an average of over 38. This included 8 centuries and 37 half-centuries.
4. Arjuna Ranatunga: 5608 runs
The World Cup winning captain, Arjuna Ranatunga led Sri Lanka in 193 matches. He scored 5608 runs at an average of 37.63 with 4 centuries and 37 half-centuries.Under his captaincy, the Sri Lankan team became a force to reckon with.
3. Stephen Fleming: 6295 runs
After becoming the captain of New Zealand in 1997 at a young age of 23, Fleming led the team until his retirement from the game in World Cup 2007 semi-final against Sri Lanka. Undoubtedly the most successful captain of New Zealand, Fleming scored 6295 runs in 218 matches as captain of New Zealand at an average of 32.78 with 7 hundreds and 38 fifties.

The second current player to feature in this list, Dhoni has scored 6441 runs at an outstanding average of over 54 in 194 matches as captain. This included 6 hundreds and 46 fifties.The only captain to win all the ICC trophies, Dhoni is the by far the most successful captain of India.

One of the most successful captains of all time, Ricky Ponting led Australia from 2002 to 2011. Under his captaincy, Australia won the World Cup in 2003 and 2007 . Leading Australia in 230 matches, he scored 8497 runs at an average of 42.91. This included 22 hundreds and 51 fifties.
