Top 10 ODI captains with most wickets

When you have earned captain’s armband, there always will be immense responsibility on you to be the representative and hero of your team. You have to lead from the front, you have to set examples for your teammates. A captain needs to watch out his players’ attitude, bowlers’ mentality, fair play and most importantly, contribute your part to the team with the bat or bowl. Here is the list of top 10 captains with maximum wickets as captain in ODI.

10. VIV RICHARDS (WI) – 64 WICKETSVivo

Sir Vivian Richards, the former West Indian cricketer popularly known as Viv (or “King Viv”), is seen as one of the greatest batsmen of all time. Richards was also voted one of the five Cricketers of the Century by a 100-member panel of experts in 2000, along with Sir Donald Bradman, Sir Garfield Sobers, Sir Jack Hobbs and Shane Warne.

He was popular for his devastating batting, but very few know, his tactful bowling also played a major part and because of these We have picked up Viv at the number.10 position in this elite list with 64 Wickets.

9. HANSIE CRONJE (SA) – 86 WICKETS  Hansie Cronje 

After an initial impressive performance in the domestic arena, Hansie Cronje finally made his debut in the international cricket at the 1992 World Cup in Sydney against a mighty Australia. He went on to earn the vice-captaincy of the South African team at a very young age but with added responsibility his contribution to South Africa both as a batsman and a bowler became way bigger.  By 1996 he managed to establish the South African team into one of the most feared and respected teams of that era. During his captaincy, South Africa even enjoyed a long streak of victories and achievements. But the infamous match Fixing Scandal during India tour led Hansie Cronje’s tragic downfall and it’s still considered as the biggest scandal in cricket history.

8. HEATH STREAK (ZIM) – 89 WICKETSHeath Streak

Heath Streak,  the former Zimbabwe captain made his Test debut during a tour of Pakistan in 1993-1994 making his presence well-marked by picking up 8 wickets in the 2nd Test at Rawalpindi (9–14 December 1993). He even won the Man of the series award taking 22 wickets at an average of 13.54. But his best bowling figures against Pakistan became better in 1995 when Pakistan toured Zimbabwe, Streak took 6/90 in the first Test at Harare.

He is the only Zimbabwean bowler to have taken over 100 Test wickets and one of only 2 Zimbabwean bowlers to have taken over 100 ODI wickets

7. KAPIL DEV (IND) 91 WICKETS

Kapil Dev  became the legend of Indian cricket after his captaincy gave India their first ever Cricket World Cup in 1983. Named by Wisden as the Indian Cricketer of the Century in 2002, Kapil Dev was undoubtedly one of the greatest all-rounders of all time. He also coached India for 10 months between October 1999 and August 2000.

Kapil used to be a right-arm pace bowler famous for his graceful action and effective outswinger and served the role of India’s main strike bowler for most of his career. He picked up 91 wickets during his captaincy and that feat gives Kapil the 7th position on this list.

6. SANATH JAYASURIYA (SL) – 92 WICKETS

Sanath Jayasuriya is regarded as one of the best ODI players of all time because of his powerful striking and match winning performances. Jayasuriya being an all-rounder, enjoyed an international cricket career which spread over two decades. Jayasuriya happens to be the only player to score over 12,000 runs with more than 300 wickets in ODIs, and hence seen as one of the best all-rounders in the history of limited-overs cricket. Jayasuriya captained the Sri Lankan cricket team from 1999 to 2003. 

5. DANIEL VETTORI (NZ) – 92 WICKETS

Daniel  Vettori is the eighth player in Test history to take 300 wickets and score 3,000 runs. Vettori used to be a bowling all-rounder who bowled slow left-arm orthodox spin; he surprised the cricketing world for his accuracy, flight and guile rather than prodigious turn. He was also one of the more consistent and effective batsmen in the New Zealand cricket team.

Vettori had taken 92 Wickets during his captaincy. the former New Zeeland skipper stands 5th in the list equaling Waqar Younis, Who has picked up the same number of wickets but with matches less than Vettori.

4. WAQAR YOUNIS (PAK) – 92 WICKETS

Waqar Younis, the former Pakistani right-arm fast bowler is widely regarded as one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time.

He played 87 Tests and 262 One Day International (ODI) matches for Pakistan during his international cricket career from 1989 to 2003. Waqar took 373 Test wickets and 416 One Day International wickets during his career. He also holds the record of best strike rate for any bowler with over 350 Test wickets.

3. IMRAN KHAN (PAK) – 131 WICKETS

Imran khan, the former captain of the Pakistan is widely regarded as the most successful captain in the history of Pakistan cricket. He led an inconsistent Pakistan cricket team in the 1992 world cup and eventually came out victorious. He is also seen as one of all-rounder rounders cricket has seen along with some of the finest players in the history of the game such as Ian Botham, Richard Hadlee and Kapil Dev. With figures of 3807 runs and 362 wickets in Test cricket, he is one of the eight elite cricketers to achieve the remarkable milestone of Triple figures in both runs and wickets.

2. SHAUN POLLOCK (SA) – 134 WICKETS

Shaun Pollock the former South Africa captain led his country from 2000 to 2003. He is the leading wicket-taker among South Africans, taking over 400 test wickets and scoring over 3,700 test runs in his 108 Test matches.

During his captaincy era, from 2000 to 2003, he picked up an astonishing figure of 134 Wickets becoming second on the list of ODI Captains with most Wickets

1. WASIM AKRAM (PAK) – 158 WICKETS  5 instances when Wasim Akram destroyed Indian batting

Wasim Akram is regarded as one of the greatest fast bowlers in the history of game. He still preserves the world record for most wickets in first-class cricket with 881 wickets and is second only to former Sri Lankan off-spinner, Muttiah Muralitharan in terms of ODI wickets with 502.

He was the first bowler to touch the 500-wicket mark in One-Day Internationals during the 2003 World Cup. The former Pakistan captain even has 23 four-wicket hauls in the b50-0vers format from 356 matches he played.
