Top 5 Achievements of Mahendra Singh Dhoni

The Indian cricket team is currently one of the most competitive teams in the world of the sport. But not long ago, they were staring down the barrel, having lost most of its core, in the space of a couple of years. But one MS Dhoni managed to keep the team together and gave them a new found energy, that laid the foundation of the current success of the squad.

The Jharkhand-born hard-hitter is easily one of the best finishers in the world and is one of the most influential players in all three formats for the Men in Blue.

He is in the last few years of his career, and even though it was rumoured that he will help Indian in yet another World Cup, he has today come and out and announced that he will not be leading the country in any form anymore.

MS Dhoni was the skipper of the limited overs side for some time now but his deputy Virat Kohli will now be handed the responsibility. There is no questioning his ability but it will be hard for the Delhi man to achieve what his predecessor did in the last decade.

With MS Dhoni’s captaincy at the international level now done and dusted, let’s take a look at 5 of his greatest achievements, playing for Team India:

ICC trophies:

Indian has always been a team that competes at the highest level but before MS Dhoni took over the Men in Blue, they had just the one World Cup to their name from 1983. However, ever since the Jharkhand man took over the team, Indian has won the T20 World Cup in 2007, the 50 over World Cup in 2011 and the Champions Trophy in 2013. This is the first time that India has won all three ICC trophies and MS Dhoni remains the only Indian captain to achieve this feat. He was influential in almost every victory in every game in all three tournaments and will be remembered as the first Indian skipper to take India to three ICC trophies in his stint.

Captaincy record in the longest format:

India has had some of the best players in the sport and had even better captains over the years. But never had the Men in Blue enjoyed a better run in the longest format of the game than under MS Dhoni in the last decade. With a win % of 45 in 60 Test matches, MS Dhoni is the highest among Indian captains, as Saurav Ganguly is in the second place with 43%. Winning a Test match, as a player, at least in all the 8 other Test playing countries (except Pakistan), MSD has set a record that will not be easy to break and he will remain as India’s most successful Test captain for a long time in the future.

91*:

Arguably the best moment of his career as an Indian skipper, is when the Indian wicket keeper sent Nuwan Kulasekara’s length delivery over the long-on boundary at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai on that April 2nd day. With India needing close to 6 runs an over in the final of the 50 over World Cup, MSD, taking responsibility, came high up the order, and grabbed the match with both hands, scoring 91, to remain as the highest run getter in a successful chase in a world cup final. He was ably helped by Yuvraj Singh and Gautam Gambhir but Dhoni, took the entire game to his ends and made sure that he ended with a six, to give the fans a moment to savor. Surely, he remains one of the best players to have dawned the colors of our nation.

No.1 in all the formats:

After MS Dhoni took over the national side, India did not have too many players who could handle the pressure of all three formats. But MSD had ideas of his own, as he builds squads differently for different formats and gave all his players a chance to excel at the highest level. His understanding of the game in general, allowed him to excel in all three formats as he stuck to the strengths of his side in most games to come out victorious. He led Indian to the number spot in the ODI format after their victory in the World Cup and he managed to keep up the form in the other formats, lifting the side to the first place in the T20’s and also in test matches. He has helped the side to in numerous victories and remains the only captain to take the side to the top of all the formats in their history.

A team of the year for three years:

In what was the prime for the Indian team under MSD, the Men in Blue managed to dominate all three formats of the game for a couple of years after winning the 50 over WC in 2011. Their achievement that year saw them named the team of the year for 2011. But MSD was not happy with that trophy and continued to make his team work hard and kept them at their best for yet another year. They snapped up the Team of the Year title for 2012, without winning any ICC trophies and just a year later, they were invincible in the Champions Trophy, taking home their 3rd ICC trophy in 7 years. They were ultimately named the Team of the Year for 2013 as well, showing how dominant MS Dhoni’s men were in those three years.

Surely, that was an exciting time for Indian cricket and it will be hard to find now that one of the greatest Indian captains has decided to step down.
