Top 5 Batsmen With Most Test Runs On A Single Ground

Over the years, it has been constantly witnessed that several greats of the game have had a keen affectionate relationship with certain venues. For instance, legendary Indian batsmen Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman were all at ease at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) and literally owned the arena despite being from a nation seven seas away from Australia.

The trend of batsmen enjoying at certain venues can be more precisely grasped through statistics. West Indian batting great Brian Lara for example, has a colossal aggregate of 1650 runs at the Antigua Recreation Ground, St John’s in just the matter of 14 tests. The destructive southpaw has scores of 375, 400* at the venue.

Keeping such a special connect in context, we go through the list of top 5 batsmen with most runs on a particular ground:

Mahela Jayawardane replaces Ricky Ponting as the head coach of Mumbai Indians.

  1. Mahela Jayawardene (SSC, Colombo – 2921 runs):

Topping the charts for a batsman with most runs on a single venue is Sri Lankan legend Mahela Jayawardene. The elegant right hander, out of a total of 11,814 aggregate Test runs, has 2921 runs at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo. Jayawardene has 25% runs of his career runs at this very venue, implying his special connection with the ground. With 11 centuries to his credit at the Sinhalese Sports Club, it is just an understatement to say that Jayawardene enjoyed batting there.

Mahela Jayawardene

  1. Mahela Jayawardene (Galle – 2382 runs):

Surprisingly, Jayawardene features yet again in this elite list, as he has another fantastic record at a particular venue. Galle has traditionally been a fortress for Sri Lanka, as the side has completed some exceptional victories there. A significant reason behind that though was Jayawardene’s form at Galle, as he aggregated 2382 runs at an average of 70.05 with seven centuries to his name. The right hander’s best score at Galle is 237 and it should be fair to say the former Sri Lanka skipper indeed relished the prospect of batting at home.

  1. Kumar Sangakkara (SSC, Colombo – 2312 runs):

Following his close friend and associate on the list is undoubtedly the greatest Sri Lankan batsman of all time Kumar Sangakkara.

Sangakkara was literally a global citizen as he amassed tons of runs in all nations and across all conditions. But the left hander’s love for Sinhalese Sports Club remains unmatched as he has 2312 runs to his name in 22 games at an average of 74.58. It was right here at Sinhalese Sports Club where Jayawardene and Sangakkara put on their epic stand of 624, which remains the highest partnership ever in international cricket history.

Jacques Kallis

  1. Jacques Kallis (Cape Town – 2181 runs):

Arguably the greatest all rounder in modern history, Kallis was an absolute champion with the bat with over 13000 test career runs at a jaw dropping average of above 55. Kallis remains the greatest cricketer from South Africa and his relationship with his nation remains intimate. Kallis loved batting at Cape Town and that is evident with his tally of 2181 runs at the Newlands Stadium in Cape Town. He was at his supreme best at this picturesque venue as he notched up nine centuries in 35 innings. His performance against India at Cape Town in January 2011 was impeccable to say the least.

Graeme Gooch

  1. Graham Gooch (Lord’s – 2015 runs):

This would be incomplete without a worshipped name from the previous era. Graham Gooch fits in the bill as he scored 2015 runs at the home of cricket, Lord’s. Gooch averaged 53.02 at Lord’s, as opposed to his career average of 42.58 along with six centuries. Gooch’s most memorable display of batting at the home of cricket was surely against India, where he scored 333. That was followed by another splendid knock of 123 in the same match. Legendary stuff to say the least!
