Top 5 batsmen with most ODI runs against a single opposition

Krishna Chopra / 13 October 2015

Run making is nothing less than a dynamic art in ODI’s. With field restrictions coming into the picture, there is the added incentive for batsmen in ODI’s to score at a rapid rate by taking a few risks that pay off. Since the inception of ODI cricket, there have been a few batsmen who have relished the prospect of playing against a certain opposition.

In the modern day game, for instance, Virat Kohli loves playing against the Sri Lankans and his stats just second that theory. There are some opponents, against whom certain batsmen are at their fluent best and their run-making ability against that team remains simply phenomenal. Thereby, it is due to have a look at the top 5 batsmen who have scored the most runs against a single opposition in ODI cricket.

5. Mahela Jayawardene (2666 runs vs India):

The elegant Sri Lankan middle order batsman simply loved playing against India and his stats too suggest that. The former Sri Lankan batsman has an aggregate of 2666 runs against India at an average of 35.07. Jayawardene has scored approximately 21.1% of his career runs against the neighboring Indian bowlers, against whom he enjoyed batting a lot.

4. Kumar Sangakkara (2700 runs vs India):

Considering the number of matches played between India and Sri Lanka over the last few years, it was obvious that another Sri Lankan batting legend would feature in this list. Kumar Sangakkara, who recently bid adieu to international cricket, has 2700 runs against the Indians, at an average of 39.7, with 6 centuries to his name. Sangakkara’s last ODI against India was in late 2014 when the Sri Lankans were whitewashed 5-0 by India at home.

3. Sanath Jayasuriya (2899 runs vs India)

When talking about batting records against a certain opponent, how can one forget the brilliance of Sanath Jayasuriya against India? Jayasuriya was at his best against the Indian bowlers, who at times seemed to be utterly helpless against the Matara mauler. Jayasuriya scored 2899 runs against India at an average of 36.23, while scoring them at a healthy strike rate of 96.98. Jayasuriya’s best score in ODI’s also came against India when he blasted the Indian bowling in Sharjah during his epic knock of 189.

2. Sachin Tendulkar (3077 runs vs Australia)

There is absolutely nothing like being at your surreal best against the best bowling attack in the world! Who better than Sachin Tendulkar to explain and portray that? The Little Master has 3077 ODI runs to his name against the Australians, making it the second highest aggregate runs against a single opposition. Tendulkar simply used to have a ball against the Kangaroos, and that is evident by his average of 44.59 against them. Tendulkar also scored 9 ODI tons against the Australians, which is another record in itself.

1. Sachin Tendulkar (3113 runs vs Sri Lanka)

Topping another record chart is once again Sachin Tendulkar, who literally owned the ODI arena. Tendulkar has 3113 runs against Sri Lanka, which makes it the most runs by any batsman in ODI’s against a single opposition. Tendulkar was a beast against the Sri Lankans and his runs came up at an average of 43.84. Tendulkar also 8 tons and 17 fifties against the Sri Lankans in the 84 ODI games he played against them.
