The IPL is one of the richest brands in the field of sports and its popularity is still on the rise even after 8 years because of the quality of cricket being played between the teams. Like any other format even in the T20 format it is always important for the team to start the game in controlled but yet aggressive manner.

Here is a list of Opening partnerships in the history of IPL that have found the right balance along with consistency over the years in no particular order –

– Shikhar Dhawan & David Warner

This is a pair that has been able to hide the weakness and brittleness of the middle order of their team Sunrisers Hyderabad and have taken the responsibility on their shoulders  to take the team close to the play offs over the past few seasons. With 3 partnerships of more than 100 in their career, they can be destructive and at the same time they compliment each other really well. Their highest stand of 130 in 2015 against the KKR was a treat to watch.

– Gautam Gambhir & Robin Uthappa

The team from Kolkata who open their game with a thought of having one of the openers on strike till the last over has given Gambhir and Uthappa a good chance to shine in the league. Though they have not been effective this season, they played a huge role in the previous campaign when the KKR lifted the cup. Their consistency can be seen in the record of ‘most consecutive half century partnerships’ with 4 such knocks.

– Brendon McCullum & Dwayne Smith

With 2 century stands between them, this pair is easily the most destructive one on the list. McCullum, who collects his runs with his speed and technique is complimented pretty well by the brute force of Dwayne Smith and this has been one of the main reasons why the Chennai Super Kings have had a great run in the IPL.

– Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir

Having played close to all forms of cricket together, Gambhir and Viru have a great understanding which has helped them cement a place in the Indian national squad for many years. They also played together for the team from Delhi for 3 years from 8-10 and were really effective with one century stand and four 50 run stands aggregating 732 runs together at the top of the order in the 3rd season of the IPL

– Murali Vijay and Michael Hussey

Another opening pair of the most consistent team in the IPL CSK, the pair of Vijay and Hussey is one of the most effective pairs in the IPL. Having scored more than 1000 runs together at the top of the order for the team from Chennai, they were both consistent and aggressive in their approach and gave CSK their title in the year 2011 against RCB. They put on 8 half-century partnerships and 2 century partnerships in 28 innings at an average of 40.92 with their highest partnership being 159.
