First Test Series win Overseas
After playing their first test match in 1932, it took 35 years for the Indian cricket team to win their first match overseas. Mansoor Ali Khan Patudi led India in the tour of New Zealand where they won their first ever test match outside India. In the first match against the Kiwis in Dunedin, the Indians achieved this feat. They even made it bigger by winning the series 3-1, their first series victory overseas. Ajit Wadekar, Erapalli Prasanna, Bishan Singh Bedi and R.G. NAdkarni were the architects of the historic victory.
World Cup Victories
India’s best moments till date would have come from their three World Cup victories. India are the only team to win a sixty over World Cup, fifty over World Cup and a World Twenty20. It all started in 1983 when the Kapil Dev led Indian team shocked the entire world by defeating the legendary West Indian team in the finals. It gave the Indians a morale and attracted a lot of fans towards the sport. Twenty four later, when no one gave India a chance in the inaugural World T20, MS Dhoni successfully led the team to triumph. If the first two victories are achieved by dark horses, the 2011 World Cup was won by the pretournament favourites in their own backyard. It was Dhoni once again who led the side to victory. The three World Cup winning moments will be remain forever in the hearts of the Indian fans.
1985 World Championships and 2013 ICC Champions Trophy
Just two years after winning the 1983 World Cup, India were facing a huge task of maintaining the consistency when the team took part in World Championships. But India, with the help of Ravi Shastri came out victorious and proved their world that their World Cup victory is not just a fluke. It also earned the Indian team a prestigious title of “Team of the Century). The 2013 ICC Champions Trophy held in England will remain in the memory of Indian cricket fans for a long time. Before the tournament started, no one gave India a chance to perform well in the conditions that are known to give nightmares to the Indian team. But MS Dhoni led his boys brilliantly throughout the tournament and destroyed each and every team that came their way. In the shortened finals, India defeated the hosts to get their hands on the trophy.
2001 Kolkata Test
The Legendary Australian team of late 1990’s and early 2000’s were thrashing each and every team that came their way. It was when the mighty Aussies toured India and defeated India in the first Test at Mumbai. In the second test at Eden Gardens, India were forced to follow on and were in the brink of yet another defeat. It was when two youngsters took the match to the opposition and showed what the Indian team under Sourav Ganguly can do. The duo shared a partnership of 376 for the fifth wicket and put India in a formidable position and set the Aussies a target of 384 runs in just over two sessions. And when it looked like Aussies would easily draw the match, another youngster Harbhajan Singh spun India to an historic victory. That victory taught the Indians on how to win against top teams.
2002 Natwest Series
The Natwest Series is well known for the actions of Sourav Ganguly who took off his shirts and waved it from the Lord’s Balcony after winning the finals of the tournament. It was because of some brilliant efforts from young batsmen Mohammed Kaif and Yuvraj Singh who took India to victory from being down and out at 149-5 in almost 25 overs chasing 326. The victory taught the Indians how to win matches overseas and since then, India has become a formidable team in overseas conditions.
