Stats: Top Ten innings in ODI cricket without a four or a six!

In the world of T20 cricket, it is hard to imagine a player scoring 20 odd runs without a single boundary to his name. Even in One Day cricket, a half century without even a single boundary is hard to imagine but you would be surprised to know that this has taken place in past.

Today, we take a glimpse at top 10 knocks in ODIs which do not even have a single boundary.

Since any Indian player was not on the list of top 10 players, so we have decided to mention Indian players namely Mohammad Azharuddin and Mohinder Amarnath who are placed on 16th and 17th rank respectively.

Special Mention:

azharuddin

Mohammad Azharuddin – To start with the list, we mention the name former captain of Indian cricket team, Mohammad Azharuddin who is placed at the sixteenth position in this list and is one of the two Indian batsmen in top twenty. In the friendship cup against the arch rivals Pakistan, Azharuddin decided to play cautiously as the team was losing wickets on a regular interval. He scored 52 runs off 87 balls before being stumped by Moin Khan off Saqlain Mushtaq. His innings proved to be quite crucial in the end as team India was able to score 208 runs to win the match by 20 runs. Bowlers did a spectacular job in sealing the game for the Indian team.

Mohinder Amarnath – This innings came at a time when team India needed someone to fire. Amarnath scored 51 runs off 62 balls when team India needed someone to score at a faster rate as they were chasing a target of 225 in 40 overs. Though Amarnath went onto score 51 runs but his knock did not include even a single boundary which proved to be costlier as Indian team lost the match by a margin of 14 runs.  A couple of boundaries could have turned fortunes of team India.

He is in the seventeenth position in the list and is the second Indian in the list of top 20 players.

adam parore

Adam Parore – Topping the list is the former New Zealand batsman Adam Parore who played 179 One day internationals for Kiwis. It was the third match of the Wills World Series where Parore came into bat at number 3 after the loss of first early wicket. He went onto score 96 runs.  After his arrival at the crease, he was soon joined by Ken Rutherford who scored a century but his knock included 13 boundaries. On one side where Rutherford was hitting boundaries, on the other side Parore was standing calm and composed like a standing river. He consumed 138 balls and during this not even a single bowler could provoke him to hit a boundary. His innings helped the Kiwis to post a good total of 269 runs on the board but New Zealand team lost the match as the Indian team chased down the target with 11 balls still to go. Sachin Tendulkar scored a century in the match.

Willing to become PCB chairman if offered: Zaheer Abbas

Zaheer Abbas – The former classy batsman Zaheer Abbas was one of the successful batsmen Pakistan has ever produced. The current president of ICC, in the year 1982 batted for almost 3 hours, scored 84 runs off 113 runs and a 0 in the boundaries column was one thing that was the highlight of his innings. He was losing out of partners on the other end which could be the probable reason of him dealing in singles and doubles. In the end, he was on the winning side which would have surely pleased him.

kim barnett

Kim Barnett – In the only ODI match of his career, Barnett scored 84 runs that too in a winning cause but still  this fact is a mystery that why he was not given a second chance. Chasing a total of 243 runs, he came in at number 3 and went back to the pavilion only after steering his team to a safe position. Even he would have no that why his first ODI game became his last ODI game.

desmond haynes

Desmond Haynes – In the decider of Benson and Hedges World series Cup, Desmond Haynes opened the innings in the all-important final contest and went onto score 76 runs. Australian team asked the West Indies team to chase a target of 179 runs and straightaway came into the act by getting two early wickets but Haynes stood there till the end of the game and saw his team winning the cup. He played according to the need of the hour and in the end earned fruits for his innings.

ashish bagai

Ashish Bagai – The former wicket-keeper of Canada Ashish Bagai played a wise innings of 74 runs in the ICC World Cricket League Division one match. He came in when the score was 17/1 and soon he lost his other partner on the same score. From there he took on the charge and scored 74 runs in 117 balls. Riding on his effort the team was able to post 200 runs on the board but lost the match as Netherlands won the game in the 35th over of the game itself. Though he rescued the team with his knock but no support from the other end was the reason for the loss. It will be unfair to blame him for the loss.

380586-duminy-getty

JP Duminy – His name in this list is the biggest surprise of the year as he is one of the players who are also regarded as the T20 specialist. Many who have seen him in T20 cricket will see this list with a disbelief but this has happened in past. Playing against Australia, Duminy forgot to change his batting gears as went onto score 71 runs without hitting even a single boundary. He and Neil McKenzie shared a partnership of 123 runs to take the team into a safe position. A quick fire innings of 40 runs from just 18 bowls in the death overs of the game from Albie Morkel was enough for South Africa to win the game.

mark greatbatch

Mark Greatbatch – Losing continues wickets and chasing a target of 229, well that is not what batsmen want whenever he comes out to bat but Mark Greatbatch encountered the same problem against Australia in Auckland as fall of regular wickets on other end forced him to stick on the wicket and go slow. During the course, he saw five batsmen going back to the pavilion. He after scoring 68 runs lost the battle and got dismissed. The New Zealand team lost the match and still the cricket pandits are confused whether to call it a wise decision or a foolish one.

david boon

David Boon – The cricketer turned match referee too has his name on this list as during Benson and Hedges World series he opened the innings for his team and went onto score 64 runs in 98 balls. Well, he cannot be blamed for not hitting a single boundary as scorecard shows that the pitch was quite a slower one as there were only 6 boundaries hit during the Australian innings. In the end, the Kangaroos won the match by a margin of 32 runs.

saeed anwar

Saeed Anwar – Maintaining a healthy strike rate throughout the innings without hitting a single boundary is a tough task but Saeed Anwar made it look too easy as in a match against New Zealand he slammed 62 runs off 67 balls without hitting a single boundary. Pakistan team posted 281 runs on the board and won the match too as they bundled out the Kiwis on a total of 235 runs. Surely this innings can be adjudged as the best innings out of all mentioned in the list.

Javed Miandad – The controversial personality Javed Miandad features in this list.  In the opening game of Benson and Hedges World series, the Pakistan boys were chasing a target of 198 runs. Javed Miandad came in at number 4 and played calm and composed innings of 59 runs off 83 balls. He played with a strike rate of 71.08 and saw his team winning the game in the last over of the innings.  He was praised for his innings but the scene could have been different if the result was an opposite one.
