Umar Gul Tips Independence Cup is Big Hope for Revival of Cricket in Pakistan

The injury-marred Pakistan discarded death-overs fast bowling specialist Umar Gul has praised and thanked Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for putting all the strenuous efforts behind making World XI tour to Pakistan a reality.

“One must thank the PCB and its Chairman for turning an idea into reality,” Gul told PakPassion.net.

As the three-match Twenty20 series is scheduled for next month the 33-year-old right-arm fast bowler Gul reiterated successful tour would eventually serve as a medium of hope for the embattled country, in order to revive the elite-level cricket in Pakistan.

“I feel that a successful tour by the World XI will serve as an important first step towards a full resumption of international cricket in Pakistan,” Gul added.

After the 2009 gruesome attack on Sri Lanka team, the fans in Pakistan has witnessed the successful tour of Zimbabwe national side, before the grand finale of the second edition of the Pakistan Super League was organized under President-level security at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on March 5, this year.

“Once the Independence Cup is over and conducted in a satisfactory manner then we should consider playing some of the games against the Sri Lanka or West Indies teams in Karachi or other parts of Pakistan which are considered safe as well,” Gul asserted.

Barring from the limited-overs tour, Pakistan is yet to witness a Test match, as 2017 has proved to be fruit for the PCB itself, as the country is looking forward to seeing international cricketing breathing life while attracting the other national teams.

“The PCB have chosen a venue for the upcoming games against the World XI based upon security considerations and I have no problem with that,” Gul further added.

The Peshawar-born bowler believes it is exciting news for the die-hard fans and eventually a great sight to witness the quality players under one roof, as he further prays the tour should end on a high note.

“This is fantastic news for the followers of cricket in Pakistan. It’s great to hear that the top players from world cricket will be visiting Pakistan and I hope and pray that all goes well on this tour,” Gul maintained.

Ruing the lack of trust from the national board management in the past, Gul, who played his previous international game in 2016 against England, has featured in 130 ODIs, 60 T20Is and 47 Tests.

The promising prospect Gul has bagged 179 wickets in the 50-over format, 163 scalps in 90 Test innings and 85 in the 20-over format.

As the World XI will be led by South African skipper Faf du Plessis, the three-match series will be beginning from September 12 and the final T20 match will be held on 15th of September, as all three games will gain the international status.

Pakistan which has adopted the United Arab Emirates since 2009 topped the Test charts in 2016 under the leadership of Misbah-Ul-Haq, as the side has clinched their maiden ICC Champions Trophy under the captaincy of Sarfraz Ahmed in the England and Wales.
