Vernon Philander suffers an ankle twist, doubtful for Bangalore Test

South Africa pacer Vernon Philander has suffered an ankle twist during a warm up football game that has put his appearance in the second Test at Bangalore in doubt. Philander was seen hobbling in visible distress and had to hold on to the shoulders of two members of the support staff. The support staff had to carry him back all the way to the dressing room.

Philander has picked up the injury after stepping on Dean Elgar’s foot. “It was a very freakish accident,” AB de Villiers said. “He [Philander] is very unlucky. It might be nothing, it might be bad.”

Dale Steyn has already been ruled out of the second Test due to a groin strain, Philander’s injury will leave South Africa with just two frontline pacers in their attack – Kagiso Rabada and Morne Morkel, who just recovered from to quad strain.

Philander bowled 27 overs and picked up three wickets in the Mohali Test, which South Africa lost three days.
