Cricket is a game of gentleman. But, sometimes bowlers use the trick of sledging to get a set batsman out. If a bowler gets into the head of a batsman that means bowler’s strategy successful to the batsman. But, there are many example where the trick of sledging boomeranged and the batsman battered the bowler. The great batsman did it against great bowler while the reverse happened in international cricket on many occasions.
Here are five incidents where bowlers made batsmen angry
1)Stuart Broad vs Sourav Ganguly
In 2007, comeback man, Sourav Ganguly was playing his last foreign series in England before the retirement. Ganguly was in good form. His partnership with Sachin Tendulkar has been doing well in England. At the Oval in the fourth ODI of the series England scored a mammoth 316 with the help of Owais Shah’s hundred.
India while chasing the target got a solid start from opening duo Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar who scored 150 runs in the first wicket partnership. English bowlers were frustrated. Young Stuart Broad started sledging Sourav Ganguly. Angry Ganguly replied back Broad with words. Broad delivered his last ball of the 9th over. The reply from the bat was pending. So, when Broad back to deliver the 11th over the innings Ganguly welcome him with a six.
2) Andre Nel vs S. Sreesanth
During India’s tour of South Africa in 2006 India have lost the series 2-1. India lost the first two Test at Cape Town and Durban. But, at New wanders, Johannesburg India defeated South Africa by 123 runs. It was the low scoring Test match. India scored 249 runs in the first innings. But, S. Sreesanth wrecked havoc on South Africa batting line-up in South Africa’s first innings to give India a 165 run first innings lead. He had taken 5 wickets for 40 runs. South Africa folded up in 84 runs. In the second innings, South Africa bowlers restricted India in 236. VVS Laxman scored 73. But, it was Sreesanth who drew attention from the dressing room. Andre Nel, who was infamous for his on-field spat with batsmen, sledged Sreesanth. The Indian pacer, who was not a meek man either, hit back at Neil by hitting a massive six over the mid off boundary.
3)Shoaib Akhtar vs Virender Sehwag
Shoaib Akhtar has been found in good shape while he was bowling at Citi Filed, New York for Sachin’s Blasters. The All-Star Cricket League has brought Akhtar, Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag in one team-Sachin’s team. But Akhtar and Sachin has shared one of the worst on-field relation.
During the 2003 World Cup match at Cape Town Pakistan have faced India and eventually lost the match by 4 wickets. But, the sight of Sachin and Shoaib rivalry was there. During India’s chase Akhtar sledged Indian opener Sehwag, said “hook maar ke dikha” (Hook it and show me). Sehwag hit back at Akhtar, “Woh non-striker pe tere baap khara hai, woh Dikhayega” (your father who is standing at the non-striker’s end will show you that pointing obviously towards Sachin Tendulkar.
Akhtar was giving bouncer frequently. Sachin taught Akhtar how to hit a hook and uppercut as the little master hit Akhtar for a maximum over the third man boundary. Sehwag who was at the non-striking end counter sledged Akhtar, who was going back to his bowling mark, said “baap, baap hota hai (The dad is the dad)”.
4) Andrew Flintoff v Yuvraj Singh
Yuvraj Singh hit six sixes off Stuart Broad during a group match against England at Kingsmead, Durban, in the inaugural World T20 in South Africa. But, just before the 19th over of the match start Andrew Flintoff came to Yuvraj Singh to say something. But, the Indian left-hand batsman was in jovial mood. So, he got angry over Flintoff, Even he went towards Flintoff raising his bat.
But, the wrath faced Stuart Broad. Inform Yuvraj hit six sixes off Broad. Many said the reason behind Yuvraj’s six sixes was Flintoff as the England all-rounder made him angry.
5)Glenn McGrath v Sachin Tendulkar
They are the gems of cricket. But, McGrath did the same to Sachin what other bowler do the little master to get his wicket.
In a Test cricket match, Sachin had a strategy to frustrate the bowlers and then launch an attack. McGrath’s and Sachin rivalry were among the classic cricket rivalry of bat and ball. The Aussie, who was infamous for his sledging, was giving bouncer to Sachin and asking why was he not playing a pull shot. Sachin was nonchalant and was offering no shot.
But, the repercussions came later in the match. Sachin launched the attack on McGrath. The batting maestro made McGrath an onlooker.
