With the change in time and change in standards of cricket, nowadays we have seen players putting extra efforts while fielding. Along with batting and bowling, fielding has now become the soul of cricket as acrobatic efforts on the field can change of the course from any point of time, remember Kapil Dev’s catch when he ran miles to catch Viv Richards? For him, that was the turning point of the game. Remember Jonty Rhodes, who carved a niche for himself in fielding. He even won a man of the match award for his fielding efforts as he was a substitute fielder in that game.
That is the difference that fielding can make in the game. As said, with development in the game especially with the introduction of T20 cricket, coaches put extra pressure on a player to oversee his fielding and fitness. Still, we see players not putting that much efforts which are required.
Liam Thomas, the England player has now set new standards in the field as, during the final of ICC Academy Dubai Invitational T20, he continued to chase and run behind the bowl despite losing his artificial leg. Thomas was fielding at the deep square before ball came running away from him, he ran the distance to cut the ball preventing it from going to the boundary. First, he dived towards the ball to prevent the ball from touching the boundary ropes and then got up to collect the ball and throw it back. but he lost his artificial leg during the course, despite that he ran and did his task well which will out other cricketers to shame.
He with his efforts has surely sent a message to all players who escape from this and has now set a standard for them, which they might not be able to achieve.
