Vijay Hazare Trophy 2016/17: Yuvraj, Gurkeerat, Manpreet Gony Take Punjab To A Tense Win Over Railways
Group A
Riding on brilliant half centuries from all-rounders Yuvraj Singh and Gurkeerat Singh Mann and a handy knock of 46 from just 24 deliveries in the later part of the innings from Manpreet Gony, Punjab went on to chase down a target of 247 against Railways in a last over thriller.
Punjab, in the morning, won the toss and opted to bowl first. They had a good start as Railways lost its first two wickets on a score of mere 38 runs. Pratham Singh and Arindam Ghosh steered the team’s totals and shared 91 runs for the third wicket to steal an early advantage from Punjab.
Punjab continued to grab regular wickets but Railways batsmen ensured that regular wickets do not hinder the progress as the batsmen were putting up runs on the board, despite losing wickets on regular basis. Railways ended their innings with a score of 246.
Just like Railways, Punjab too had a jittery start as they too lost two early wickets but their middle order batsmen too kept the team in a race to this total. Yuvraj Singh and Gurkeerat Singh Mann played a crucial knock of 66 and 69 to keep the team afloat.
Though Punjab lost the wicket of Yuvraj but Gurkeerat Singh Mann stayed there till the end. The win could not have been possible if Manpreet Gony wouldn’t have played an innings of 46 in just 24 balls as his innings came at a time when Punjab needed to 80 runs in 52 deliveries.
His blistering knock helped Punjab to seal a win over Railways in an evenly poised game.
