All-rounder Vijay Shankar is likely to be appointed as the captain of Tamil Nadu for the upcoming Ranji Trophy season. Shankar led the side to a victory in Vijay Harare Trophy and Deodhar Trophy earlier this year and the team management is likely to make him full-time captain of the state team.

Apart from his impressive performance as a leader, another reason for the team management looking forward to giving him the full-time duty is the unavailability of Abhinav Mukund. The left-handed opening batsman is expected to return to the Test team for Sri Lanka series, and in that case, the team will miss his services. However, he has a straight competition with his teammate and opening partner in Ranji team, i.e., Murali Vijay, for a place in the Indian team as an opener.

TNCA is also looking forward to handing Baba Indrajith the vice-captaincy duties. He recently impressed in Duleep Trophy by notching a double century against India Blue. There can be a case when he might lead the team in the first game of the season as India A is set to face New Zealand A in five matches one-day series and Shankar is expected to retain his place in India A side.
In that case, Indrajith will be straightaway elevated to the post of captain or the board will have an option to ask Vijay to lead the team so as responsibility does not fall on the young lad.
Tamil Nadu will open its Ranji Trophy campaign against Andhra Pradesh on October 6. Last year, they qualified for the semi-finals of the tournament before losing to Mumbai in the knockout game by six wickets.
