Virat Kohli All Set To Become The Highest Run Getter In The ODI Format Of This Calendar Year
Whether you agree or disagree, Indian skipper Virat Kohli has been in some serious form in 2017 just like he was in 2016. The magnitude of the 2016 run scoring spree may not be similar to the way he has performed in 2017. But, overall, he has had yet another highly successful year.
The outcome of his spectacular run may potentially see him notch up a prestigious distinction by the end of ongoing ODI series against Sri Lanka.
Kohli started the five-match series with a stunning unbeaten half-century, an unbeaten 82 off just 70 deliveries in the match winning effort on the first ODI at Dambulla, has now taken his overall run scoring tally within very close to achieving yet another milestone in ODI cricket.
Another milestone beckons Kohli
He has scored 769 runs in 14 matches this year. This is just 45 runs behind South African skipper Faf Du Plessis and 16 runs behind England stalwart Joe Root in the list of highest run getters in this calendar year.
Du Plessis has scored 814 in 16 matches while Root 785 in 14 matches.
Kohli’s average is the best amongst the three as he has hit these runs at an astounding average of 96.1 compared to Root’s 71.3 and Du Plessis’ 58.1.
Pefect Opportunity To Leapfrog the Duo
With four ODIs left in the series, Kohli has the perfect opportunity to topple both Root and Du Plessis by the end of this series which still has 4 ODIs to culminate.
He may also get to stay there for a while as England will not play the 50-over format until September 19 (against West Indies) while South Africa will also not be competing in this format until October 15 (against Bangladesh). Therefore, making it completely possible for Kohli to keep his place at the top for some time.
